A pair of articles relevent to the mute issue

The first article is a bit vacuous and ignores the low number of actual female users present in the online community during its infancy. (It was very much a white male dominated area back in those days).
The second 2 part article is a bit of a bank shot and deals heavily with current US politics / policies but the underlying principles do apply.
