Today my unit took part in the local christmas parade, and I got the pleasure of walking Staff Sergeant Akbar, an Army K9 veteran with 4 tours in iraq. It was the most badass creature I ever encountered. He was massive, the picture doesn't give him justice, and it was a weird experience saluting a dog and him sitting in a K9 version of attention. There were also drummers in the parade, and Akbar barked and whimpered, showing obvious signs of what the handlers called the K9 equivalent to PTSD, which was heart wrenching. Coolest dog ever.

Is SSgt Akbar still in service, or has he been/is he being adopted out to a vet?

He is a vet. He has a massive waiting list for adoption. The handlers choose who they think will be the best fit. Usually they go to veterans though yah.
