Elite: Dangerous
Tried it. Love it. Wish you guys were there too...
VO will always be my fave game, but this is new and shiny for now.

been there. still there.
I'd love to try it but they don't make it for my PC.
I'll wait until I hear more people raving about it. I'm not about to shell out 60 bucks to a game that I've never played before or doesn't offer a demo. Nor am I clear about what I would get for the money. Are their recurring charges? Or do I have to buy stuff in game to make the game playable? Moreover, I can't even create an account without having to make the purchase.
This all leaves me with a bad taste in my mouth with respect to the game. They do offer some great paint options for the different ship classes though.

no recurring charge, no items in the game are purchasable that affect game play.
is it a drop in alternative to VO? not yet and they dont have the same focus in this genre anyway. The trouble areas people speak of regarding co-operative multiplaying are being addressed in February and more so in following months. There is a roadmap and they do a pretty good job of sticking to it by their preconceived dates.
Not looking to advertise on here about the merits of other games, even if this is the off-topic forum. Seems in bad taste. I've spent much more money on VO than elite, and i dont feel like you need to choose one or the other at this time. They're totally different experiences.

I agree with everything in the last statement made by cellsafemode...
I took a look on their website after this was posted and it looks interesting. Shame it's Windows only, but I could just toss in another hard drive into the system if it's a really awesome game. Perhaps after the pre-release of Windows 10 comes out I'll play around with it.
IIRC, they're working on the Mac version now.
Can't remember if there's supposed to be a Linux version in the future or not, though.

i bought another ssd and installed windows in trial mode just to play this game and I haven't run windows on my home computer since 1997.
I started playing around with Linux back at the 0.99 kernel release, think that was 1992. Anyways, a native port would be cool.
Maybe if the elite dangerous ninny-carebear population reaches critical mass i'll have somebody to terrorise and then it will become an interesting prospect. But as it stands it's looking fairly uninteresting despite your recommendations which I hold in high regard.
That said, I overlooked VO the first time I played it, but it was the commitment to linux and open plugin API that made VO the real contender for my attention. It's a rare sales point indeed for an MMO. Elite doesn't have that.
