Valve: Linux is the Future of Gaming
Linux users wish it was.
Ibm investing 1billion dollars to Linux and other openware. Ham
Haha, yeah tarenty. But it's kinda like an Itani saying 'Valkryies are the future of combat'. Valve is pushing ideology here because they want a better deal for their product and microsoft isn't giving it to them. The under-dog always plays the 'free and open platform' card until they are no longer the under-dog.
Look at steam, that's totally historically been a great 'free and open platform', not. Greenlight has been a deliberate attempt to try and push it in that direction, at least from a PR perspective, and you can see why; it aligns perfectly with their other business interests. The simple fact is they are still a proprietary company selling proprietary software on a proprietary platform. Of course they're arguing for open platforms; that's the market they don't have a monopoly on yet.
I'm the first to advocate the mainstreaming of free software, and it is nice when a company can come out and say, look at us we're making money and promoting software freedom. But they aren't just promoting free software, most of it is proprietary and Linux will only be the future of gaming if and when Valve manages to capture the majority of the mainstream market with its product. There is no pre-determined future of the industry that one company is going to discover and then ride the wave on.
What he really wants to say is; Valve is the future of gaming, oh and we use Linux.
If they really supported grassroots linux, they would have greenlit VO by now.

Was that directed at me? Because I didn't write the article, merely linked it.
No it's commentary
I agree with TRS. I tried explaining this to someone on mmorpg.com (not nearly so eloquently) and he was all like "but... but... steam greenlight!" Not that the average gamer would necessarily grasp the concept of what a corporate entity is, but Valve certainly is that.
It would be great if they did end up greenlighting VO; I have no idea why it hasn't happened already (my guess is they are either relying too heavily on crowd-influenced metrics or a Valve executive just hasn't experienced VO yet).
Slightly off topic, but I like that one guy's comment, currently at the end of the "Eve Copy" thread on the GL page.

Yeah nice to see a review by somebody with a brain.
Yeah Linux has a funny relationship with the corporate world. There is like a camp of people that are totally against corporate interests influencing aspects of linux or mixing it with proprietary software then there are others that are totally on about commercial viability of free software and more open to it.
I always thought of Valve as notoriously monopolistic in a way so the free and open thing doesn't really fly with me greenlight notwithstanding.
Greenlight also seems to work like sending your resume to a top tier professional firm. You get filtered on stats and then if you meet the stats you are considered on merit. I doubt VO will even get looked at until we reach a big big number of upvotes.
Feel free to direct me to the idiots on mmorpg.com for free education, giving back to the community is what I do :P

This is the thread that sparked my comment:

(be aware that you're being directed to a site with a lot of obnoxious banner ads... no pop-ups that I've found)

Idk what the fuck he's on about, there's no way that we're going to see a flood of indie MMO's just because we have kickstarter. It's just tragic e-hipster kickstarter fanboy bullshit if you ask me, hooray for kickstarter.
Kickstarter has become a disgraceful subjugation of consumer rights (or lack-thereof in some jurisdictions) allowing companies to sell products to consumers before they even exist and transferring all the business management and other risks usually borne by companies back to the consumer. There's a potentially massive consumer law headache waiting to happen there.
Honestly sometimes I think VO would be better off losing the 'MMO' tag, sometimes I feel it does more harm than good.
Back on topic, linux is the future! Wooo!

Linux was the future nine years ago when it was that cool geeky thing I'd heard about from cool geeky people on the internet, about the same time I was editing system32.dll just so I could change the default folder icons, because Windows 98 was that retarded.
Nowadays I am surprised when things don't work with Linux, not the other way around, and I'm startled when I remember that there are still people using Windows. Linux is the present, it's just that most of the world is (as usual) stuck in the past. They won't switch to Linux until we've already moved on to whatever supplants it. And then, of course, they'll be like, "Hey dude, check out this cool OS I found, it's way better than Windows! You should try it!"
