Is any body else slightly disturbed at the level of ridiculousness of over-monetizing the hype of Star Citizen? Not to mention that people have no idea what they're buying into.
Now that their goal is to do it by 100% crowdfund and zero capital investors, they do seem to be getting greedy. They should start offering tiny slices of profit sharing to large pledges, not more game-to-be assets. Yeah... that's likely... *NOT* The hype is what the hype is. They're after $21M now, and are past halfway. Argue with success if you will, but their marketing is nothing if not effective: 2M of that was in the last 2 weeks.
Not only do people have no idea what they're buying into, they are all flocking to the site as a store, and not a fundraiser. This last week of LTI/alpha access will continue to be nuts. After that they'll likely fleece the existing pledgers again with some promo when they release the hangar module in August. If alpha turns into testing only ships you have purchased, torches and pitchforks may be in order, but they'll still sell more ships.
I'm in for a few ships, it's no secret. The Constellation had me at "hello". I try to keep the attitude that I helped pay for the development costs of the assets I want to play. Nothing to do do but wait & see if Chris Roberts can deliver.
Show of hands: Who else has pledged?

/me waves his silly white plastic card in the air.
EDIT: Wow, their new website sucks.

SC-free here. If they can't make a game with the money they already have then it's hopeless and there's no point in me contributing.
I honestly lost all interest in it when I found out people could board my ships and basically take away my ability to play the spaceship game at whim. If they want walking, fine, but that's too damned much.
And how is that any different from being killed?
My objection is the same objection that people who hate open pvp have. I can't stand that gameplay but other players can force it on me whenever they want and whether I want it or not.
If I wanted to run around getting shot in the face with assault rifles, I have 3 fps games I can slap in my xbox. Hell, if I wanted the possibility of getting shot in the face with assault rifles, I have 3 fps games I can slap in my xbox.

I highly doubt that Star Citizen is hopeless, but I definitely agree with the overhyped vibe some have pointed out. I'm not a huge fan of crowdfunding, especially if I'm not intimately acquainted with the product. I'll like to see the launched product before I pay anything, and whether I end up playing depends on if they over-monetize in game content.
I suspect they've already crossed that line as I hear you can basically skip 60h of gameplay with real cash. I know that may anger some SC fans, but it's a big issue to me. I play online games to get outside the normal realm of everyday socio-economic strata, not to carry that with me.
The fans are another matter, but it's a reminder of reasons I'm glad I play VO.
Long story short: I may check it out at launch if I have the time and energy, but VO has already filled that twitch-based space game void in my life (and has since the days of X-Wing and Escape Velocity).

Ah, okay then. But if your issue is with X in general, you should say that your issue is with X, not that your issue is with X.subfactor_Y. You had me wondering if maybe suffering ship theft would be worse than ship destruction, e.g. maybe the insurance doesn't cover theft, or maybe they can take your character prisoner and literally stop you from playing for a while.
(For the record, I have absolutely nothing against people who don't like open-pvp. The people I dislike are the ones who insist on trying to convert those open-pvp games into yet more closed-pvp games. The internet is a big place. There is room for myriad different games to coexist.)

Well said Rin.
Like it or hate it, their Hornet is waaaaaayyyyyyy nicer looking than ours!
So wait, it's basically pay to win?
It is going to be twitch combat, so you'll still have to know what you're doing to actually win, but you can buy crap for money, yeah. My assumption is also that gear will matter a lot more there than it will over here, but that's purely assumption.
Hahaha - yes Ryan from what I hear their hornet will be a lot more useful than ours too!
In all fairness our Hornet is good as a light bomber (all Gems) a rocket turbo sniper (only set up I use) and a quad rail platform (fucking deadly!)...
Ours is of course ugly as hell.
Ours is of course ugly as hell.
Ours is sexy, and has it's niche as a sniper/light bomber. It's a bit versatile in that way.
If you want to talk about shitty ships, talk about the raptor.

We're talking bout looks. Raptor looks great. If you think the Hornet is sexy... you need to have your eyes examined. "

The game has been cancelled. I hope you've enjoyed paying us. NO REFUNDS!!
That would be the best thing, ever.

Now there's no call for that. There's room in this world for more than VO and EVE. Even if some of those other games suck.
i just meant it would be funny, i'm not wishing ill will.
but srsly, after everyone paid them ALL That money and they were just
SO LONG & THANKS FOR ALL THE FISH!
I would laugh, and laugh, and snort and laugh.
