If you can overclock it with the click of a button... then why didn't they simply release it at a maxed out config? Heat issues? Stability issues?

Is overclocking officially supported? Do the official ATI drivers allow you to do this? So if you fry your card, ATI will take full responsibility and will give you a replacement?

I'm leaning more towards nVidia nowadays. I haven't had much luck with ATI cards recently. I guess I'm just tired of 'em and wanna try something different. Everyone keeps spittin' on nVidia and saying how much they suck. But I personally think their FX line of graphics cards kick ass for its value. Oh well. Who cares if you only get 120 FPS instead of 190 FPS. Blah blah blah...

/me crosses fingers that his PowerBook's nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 has r_glow support

Actually, nvidia and ati are pretty much on the same level.

But you can think of nvidia ruling in the lower budget class, and ati reigning in the middle and higher budget class.

But if I had to chose, then my next card would have been an ATI one, because in my opinion they are having the upper hand slightly for the moment. And are fully directx9 supportable. What with nvidia is sometimes still a small liability.

But either way, cards of both companies are still more then good enough. It just depends on what budget you have to spend and your past experiences with cards from that manufacturer :D

Indeed, the Half-Life 2 test drive found at Firing Squad seems to confirm this.

Take a look at some of those FPS rates. ATI clearly kicks nVidia's ass. But that's using DX9. With DX8, you see those nVidia cards crawling back up again. This really doesn't concern me since I use a Mac and OpenGL is almost exclusively used for OS X. Almost? Maybe it IS the only API available. I'm not sure. Anyhow, I think OpenGL is a whole 'nother story in terms of performance.

PS: HL2 better get ported to Mac.

nvidia has better opengl support... I mean, all their card demos are opengl, not directx. Now if only the chameleon demo could be implimented into a game... :P

As for overclocking, well, I love to overclock. Here's my gfx card stats:

CORE

Original: 250Mhz
Now: 300Mhz

MEMORY

Original: 425Mhz
Now: 525Mhz

Mmmmmmm....

Arolte: The overclocking software...came with the card. The warranty is still there no matter if you use the overclocking software or not. There is no instability what so ever. The program even includes profiles of games to get the best out of the gpu for your gaming.

I have this http://compreviews.about.com/library/weekly/aafpr-SapphireR96P.htm but a little bit better version of overclocking software than whats shown here.

http://compreviews.about.com/library/weekly/aafpr-SapphireR96P_2.htm shows the page of all the increases from not overclocked to overclocked. In some of these I go faster than what they get so I'm quite happy :)

Rogue, that's disturbing... What kind of cooling do you use? :P

None. :P

I overclocked it with the "nvclock" application... And it only crashes when I turn on sba and that, so I just have overclocking and fastwrites. My extensive testing returned that sba has no effect. Here are my results (with less ambitions overclocking, may I note). All results are based on glxgears.

Standard:

2900-3600 fps

--------------------------------------

With overclocking

3600-3800 fps

---------------------------------------

With overclocking & AGP Fast-Writes

3600-3900 fps

---------------------------------------

With overclocking & Side Bank Addressing

3500-3900 fps

---------------------------------------

With overclocking, AGP Fast-Writes and Side Band Addressing

3800-3900 fps

---------------------------------------------------------------------

****NOTES****
Overclocking is:
Core clocked from 250Mhz to 275Mhz
Memory Clocked from 400Mhz to 525Mhz
All fps are for a glxgears window, standard size, with only twm running. The first number is the first or lowest score, the second number is the highest

CONCLUSION:

Overclocking matters more to performance than FW or SBA, but is more dangerous. Use at your own risk!
