Heh, it's either a really really stupid move or a really really fucking manipulatively smart move. A shit load of people found out about the movie from the memes, looked it up, discovered that it is, in fact, a classic, and actually bought it... so it's actually very very good free advertising. So most likely they're just really really stupid and don't quite have a grasp on the effect of digital media on business.
On the other, much less likely hand... all this talk about it has sort of increased the publicity of the meme and, in the long run, will probably revive it (the attention span of the internet is short, as simulated in the post former to this). The longer the meme goes on, the more free publicity Downfall gets. The videos don't need to be accessible (in fact they still are, just not on YouTube), people just need to be talking about them. Hell, I know I will probably get into a discussion about this with the folks and we'll end up wanting to watch Downfall again. I haven't seen it in a while and it is a classic.
