Vendetta 2D? (Mac only)
You know, I just remembered playng this cool game a long time ago called Asterax. Despite the fact that you had to blast asteroids, and sometimes kill flying saucers, it somehow reminded me of Vendetta. The only thing that's missing are sectors, online gameplay with other players, and the killing of bots instead of asteroids.
When you start the game you pick from three ships (cool, yet simple designs). Each ship has its own strengths and weaknesses, in the very same way the heavy, medium, and light ship classes of Vendetta behave. But wait, there's more. Each ship comes with a stock engine, stock weapon, and stock shields. When you blow up asteroids, you can collect these green crystals that can be used as money to buy new shields, new weapons, and new boosters (they're even labeled as small, medium, heavy class etc.). You also have the option of insuring your ship in the bank (StarFreeze, hehe). You also get to buy various gadgets for your ship, including a bot that seeks out repair kits and crystals.
It's really hard to describe the game. I don't know why, but it feels a lot like Vendetta, but in 2D. The ships have similar acceleration rates according to the engine you buy, you get to buy upgrades and repair in "stations" at the end of a level, and you get to pick your own ship from the beginning. For those who wanna try it out, it's for Mac only (OS 8 or higher). When you launch the game, be sure to have the bottom two things in the settings menu checked (double speed or whatever it says). It makes the game run much smoother. Anyway, be sure to check it out!

Ummm... That's more or less a Roids clone... It's a pretty common type of game...
Last I checked Asteroid clone games (or the original itself) didn't let you pick your own ship, didn't let you upgrade weapons, didn't let you upgrade engines, didn't let you upgrade shields, etc.

I love that game! (Astrax) The secret to winning was choosing the heavy ship and saving up to buy the multiplying shots and just setting off one huge chain reaction! ;)
