Don't go for ATI on Linux :|, Nvidia offers many advantages for - in most cases - a bit more money.
I would usually agree with you Lolin, but since AMD bought out ATI their Linux support has become quite stable. My new PC (Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600, 4GB DDR2, PCI-E 2.0 ATI Radeon HD 3870 x 2 Cross fire, 500 Gig HDD) works great with the 32bit and 64bit drivers, and with OpenGL 3.0 support too!
And this is coming from an nVidia fan boy!
