Yeah, this is gonna get moved to off topic. But still, this is undeniably funny for some reason,

It only affected non-Vista machines where Windows is not on the first partition (some retail vendors put the System Restore stuff on the first partition) and/or EVE is installed on the same drive that Windows is (ie, the C: drive).

To CCP's credit, the second they found out about the issue, they terminated any active downloads of the graphical upgrades and disabled any new download requests for the content. The issue has been fixed for a while now.

Seriously, it's a fifteen minute fix if you have the XP installation disc on you and you know your way around the System Restore utility and the DOS prompt (particularly the bootcfg command).

I have to agree, though, that naming something boot.ini, or another one of the essential files names, is asking for it.

Good thing I stopped playing EVE in Sept...

I picked a good day to try out this EVE thing. It big an red and everywhere on the site and in the game. Oh when I finally got done with the character building thing and finally got to actually play, the game crashed. What a wonderful first impression :)
I also got really lost. kinda hard to get the hang of.

I dont really understand what happened, about that boot.ini thingy, what did it do? Fucked up computers big time?
Dec 06, 2007 Surbius link
I think it over-written the Windows boot file which allows it to... boot. And if I recall correctly, EVE boot.ini data for a Windows boot file wont work so well.

Yay for malicious software that you pay for! :D

so people werent able to reboot their computers? Or did their computers crashed when they did so?

Ok as a avery active eve player and current vo traitor i totally agree. The one of the update intallers to use the new graphics erases or ever rights the boot.ini file. On vista windows does use one so its safe. But xp needs it to start.

And leber i agree with you. Any company that uses the boot.ini or any other major system file is just stupid and his asking for trouble.
