I'm confused. I hear some people can play it on macs but I thought BTRL wasn't released on macs yet...

If you download and install the Windows version using a PC, Parallels, BootCamp, VirtualPC etc, and then put the BTRL folder on your mac HD and put this: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/FAQ/Downloads/BtRL.dmg
in your Demo folder, it should work.

The actual content that the BTRL team put together is cross platform. From what I read on the forums though, they wanted it to be "self-contained" without requiring the user to first set up the open source FS2 engine, then download the BTRL files, put them in the right place, make sure it loads, etc. Cuts out a lot of hassles. The Wing Commander Saga team did the same thing for their initial release.

How's the combat? Like V-O or not?

It's kinda like VO and it's kinda not :P

Leber: It's very much like VO combat; in fact, some features that weren't used in FS2 are now being used (namely, sliding/strafing) that make it even *more* like VO's physics mode.

Combat is much more fast-paced in single-player than VO is typically, and let's just say that if you've ever played multiplayer FS2... you know how much faster that is. If you don't pay attention to what's going on, you are dead. Quickly. In VO, that's mostly true... with several exceptions.

Word of warning:

I'm not sure whether this applies across all platforms, but the main missions on the demo put severe strain on a lot of computers. I saw a lot of complaints about framerate on the BtRL project forum. It all seems caused by the big asteroid models they have. The project devs are aware of the issue, so hopefully they can fix the model a bit to speed the game up.

Running on a Powerbook G4 12", I can't get more than 5-6 fps in the first mission, even turning all detail to low and disabling some of the effects options in the config file. Damn shame too, it's a lot of fun.

Also, PPC Macs are apparently out of luck for multiplayer so far, due to problems in the FS2 network/multiplayer code. The next release of the FS2 engine (3.6.10) is slated to have fully cross-platform multiplayer code. Could be a while though.

Multiplayer does work on PowerPC macs, just not the FS2NetD part (you can connect via direct ip)

Finally it's come! Amazing work they've done with the voice work, music and the FS2 Engine especially. Sadly though, I don't think my PPC 600MHz G3 will have a snowball's chance in hedes running it.

It's funny, when this was first posted, I replied that I thought it made VO look chincy... Wonder why that post was removed?
