republicans do not know how to shrink the government
lebermac, your party sucks at its job.
republicans have controlled congress since 1994 (except for a tiny period under clinton). they have controlled the president since 2000. they have controlled the supreme court for quite a while except for bader-ginsburg, but she retired recently and now you own that too. republicans have controlled the military since the 1980s.
in that time, the government has grown leaps and bounds in its vast bureaucracy and intrusion into people's daily lives. gay people cannot adopt children in texas and many other states, thanks to specific republican movements in the recent elections. they cant get married; soon this may be written into our very constitution alongside things like the right to free speech, restrictions on search and seizure, abolition of slavery, womens right to vote, right to own a gun. the republicans are the ones who have somehow confused your bedroom practices with your fundamental rights as a human being.
the war has generated a massive increase in bureaucracy that has hindered things like free movement of people around the country. they created a whole new agency that sucks of billions of dollars of money so that innocent people can be illegally searched for going on a bus or airplane or train. there are massive spying programs being performed against american citizens who are not even suspected of crimes, for example the NSA building a database of who everyone has telephoned, involving massive bureaucracy and government intimidation of corporations to participate in the program. the government is involved in making secret prisons outside the watch of citizen oversight and thrown out principles like habeas corpus and freedom of speech.
the military itself is a massive bureaucry; the US government spends as much money on the military as most of the rest of the world put together, and it makes up a massive portion of the budget. even now, 16 years after the cold war is over, this has yet to shrink significantly, despite the fact that there is no more global 'communist threat' --- the communists are what keep cheap products on the shelves at wal-mart, a company whose executives are major contributors to the republican party.
hundreds of thousands of people are in jail for using drugs, a per capita prison rate higher than almost any other nation, thanks to the governments 'war on drugs', while these peoples children go fatherless or motherless. for this, we have a massive increase in the federal and state prison bureaucracy, involving massive spending on prison construction and staffing.
now there is 'privatization', which is a fancy way for political cronies to get government jobs instead of government workers having those jobs. it means the rigorous government anti-discrimination and anti-nepotism clauses do not have to be followed when hiring people, and those who give the biggest campaign contributions can get fat government contracts. and when someone like McCain tries to fight against it with campaign finance reform, who attacks him? democrats, but also republicans from his own party! and since republicans have controlled congress and the presidency for the past 6 years, and hence control the lawmaking process, i am not impressed by their lame excuses.
now i will admit its almost impossible to fire a government worker, but its also almost impossible to fire a private contractor who gives millions of dollars a year to a political party.
please tell me how Republicans shrink government, id love to hear it.
