We can land on planets now. It's just very carefully concealed. Go to a sector with a planet on the navmap, and point to the planet. Then fly until you're exactly 2,732,123 meters from the nearest large object and type /explode.

You can't land on planets. It is something the devs want to happen but it isn't a high priority and has not been worked on.
