New Tivo Feture and Avi to MPEG 2 conversion
If you haven't heard tivo has a new feture. You can now transfer movies from your computer to the tivo!!!

The only problem is that you have to have the files in MPEG-2 formatt. Anyone know a fast way to convert avi, wmv and divx files to mepeg 2 files?
EDIT: Link fixed.

I got a 404 at that link.
I still have my old Series 1 TiVo - just replaced the hard drive and fan on it last week. Whatever will I do with 135 hours of storage capacity???
If you don't have TiVo, you are wasting your life watching commercials and whatever crap happens to be on when you are in the mood to watch TV.

Sorry FM this feature won't help you. You need a Seris 2 Tivo to use it, I think.
I love this feature. I was gonna upgrade my seris 2 80Gb player., But now i don't need to. I have 2 160Gb hard drives in my computer. now i can use that as storage.

Ooo, nice. Too bad we don't have a TiVo (or any DVR). :-/
*glares at RCN to finish running wire*
Anyway, I was doing some research into AVI to MPEG2 conversion a while ago. There are a few free converters out there; check the Doom9 forums.

Well what I WANT to do is transfer TiVo movies to my computer so I can EDIT them and record DVD's.
However, they're making that difficult for us Mac users. Grrrr...

You need to stick some stuff on your tivo first though.

Lebermac: I forgot about you mac users. To bad so sad :)
Just Kidding. Keep searching there are ways to do what you want. Just don't give up looking. and there are ways without having to open up your tivo box.
I'm trying GUI4FFMPEG and TMPGEnc Plus to do the conversions. It works and i can see and play the files on my Tivo with no problem. the problems i have are that it takes 3 times or more to encode and the files are huge. I been told that the tivo can only play MPEG2 and that it is hard wired. I wish they but out a "software" update or something to let it play more files.
I don't see my tivo as just a DVR anymore. Its a full media center. I can take files i got from the internet and finally play them on my TV and don't have to just see them on my computer. (I know I could just burn a DVD and play them that way but thats even more time consumming and my DVD player doesn't want to read most discs i burn.
If you don't already have a tivo this is the perfect time. run out and get one. there is nothing greater in the world!!!
