How is apple crazy?
Just for clarification, the iPod Nano uses a 2 or 4 gigabyte solid state hard drive, no spinning hard disk to get broken. Woo.

You could send me the mini, and then buy your gf a new nano.
Man, you people really are a bunch of Apple's slaves, arentcha?
Arsonist...
I'll be interested in the nano when it's 20+ GB in storage capacity (I tend to use my iPod as portable HD as well as mp3 player).

Might I point out that 1gb scan disk devices have been out for quite some while now. Four of them would be smaller than a match book. Cramming 4gb of storage in that size a case is not all that astonishing.
EDIT: This reminded me of something so i grabbed my guiness book of world records from 2000.
"The IBM microdisk can fit 2.5 gigabytes of data into 1 in.^2 of disk space. The disk was unveiled in march of 1999 by a team at IBM's Storage Systems Division in San Jose California."

If it isn't astonishing, how come Creative, Sony, iRiver, or Rio have not done it?
I'm strictley speakling from a hardware perspective. Thought to answer your question I have no idea.

The IBM Microdisk is a hard drive, not a flash drive. Also, consider that the iPod nano has to hold the processors, display hardware, battery, jacks, etc. Is it impossible? No, not at all. Nevertheless, it's still pretty impressive.
For those who care, here is a link to a page with links to pictures of the innards.

Um. That link causes Firefox to segfault... I think it's the banner image on top, since I can see the site right before the segfault, but the banner image still has an image download placeholder, but it could be something at the bottom of the page too. Note: IE works fine, although it's not exactly my favorite idea.
Safari works fine. Abandon your wrongful foxish ways, and return to the one and only browsing experience.

I won't be buying one until they're 100 gig and reasonably priced (sometime after hell freezes over)
iPods are overrated...

Yes, because everyone has 100 gigs of music.
How to create a 100GB mp3 player:
Buy a 100GB hard drive
But an old (300MHz or so) laptop
Remove the laptop motherboard from its case. Install the 100GB hard drive, using a laptop->desktop IDE adapter if necessary.
Install linux on the hard drive. Set up xmms with remote.
Solder on some buttons and use xkeymod to map them to xmms remote controls.
Buy a backpack
Sew the laptop mobo and hard drive into the backpack. Attach the buttons to the outside.
*BONUS* Use a mini LCD screen to display song information
After carrying around your new "backpod" for a few weeks and enjoying the magnificent 4 hour battery life, go appreciate an actual portable music device.

Suicidal Lemming: Its not al about the music. I have 45Gb of music and podcasts. And I have a 30 GB Ipod. I know I don't need to carry every song I own with me but i would be nice. And remember its an external hard drive too. I do carry programs and files around with me. And sometimes use it as a back up if noothing else is handy.
The Nano looks real cool but for the price and size i would rather buy the biggest regular iPod. I'm acuatually looking to buy another one because my iPod is acting flaky. Its not syncing properly with my computer anamore. I might be able to transfer 5 song before it craches itunes. the ipod and the computer. Its almost 4 years old so i know its time for a new one and i will save some money and get the $500 model.
Only one bad thing i could say about Apple though. Its gonna cost about $300 to fix my ipod if i wanted it fixed. That is way to much money. If it broke whitin 1 year able would have fixed it for free and just given me a new one.
I still love Apple though. And I love and miss my iPod!!!
