Oh yah, gah. Forgot to go all the way back into the lishts flickering on and off age. Heh. I'm not that kinda gamer myself. Also Robotron was isometric, which came out before Smash T.V. I was the kid in the corner playing Radien FIghters and getting to the third or forth world on one quater and burning the scores of everyone else off the screen. I'm a top scrolling shooter kinda gamer. Also my favorite console is the NeoGeo. But I'm straying from the point of the post. Heh.

"Also Robotron was isometric.."

Actually, Robotron was flat screen. But it had and as far as I know introduced the two fisted game play that Smash TV used to with such success...hint hint.

Oh yah, Robotron is like Zelda and Chrono Trigger, I forgot. It's drawns to the side but is really a top view. Crazy game designers could only come up with wacko concept. Also after doing a little research, the first isometric game was called "Ant Attack" never played it tho, don't plan to.

The answer I was looking for was Ultima IV - the game that introduced the various props of acquiring avatarhood (runes, shrines, mantras, etc.). The bell, book, and candle were the three items required to open the gates of the Stygian Abyss. The runes were not used in spell casting (you rightfully mention spell components). The 8 runes access to the 8 shrines. Apparantly most of also appeared in Ultima Underground.

Since Panda keeps mentioning it, "Your mission is to rescue the last human family on Earth", IS Robotron. The original Robotron 2084 was flat screen and featured largely unanimated sprites - the same sort of graphics as Space Invaders. Nonetheless, it is one of the funnest games of all time, and Smash TV is basically Robotron 2084 with better graphics and alot more flavor. The gameplay is essentially identical and both are very addictive.

"Ant Attack" is a good answer, but it came out in 1983 not 1982 and doesn't involve correctly navigating small gaps in walls. As far as it being the first isometric game or not, it depends exactly on what definition of isometric you use. An isometric game doesn't involve 3D rendering. Instead isometric is a technique of making 2D look like 3D by using 2D animation pre-rendered in perspective and a particular trick of perspective that allows everything on the screen to be seen by the eye as being roughly equidistant. The game I am thinking of is basically a side scroller, but it was the first game which tilted the the perspective and used 2D sprites drawn to look 3D to create the illusion of 3D. Without intending to lessen his position in the history of game development, Mr. White's claim to have made the first true isometric game is depended upon you accepting the claim that in order to be isometric you need to scroll along all 4 diagonals (not just one) or some other quite technical and rather specific definition of what isometric means.

Wait a minute... Robotron... Was that the one where you're a little guy, and the robots follow you, and if they touch you or something you die, but if they run into each other or debris they die? I'm really bad at that game...
