When J. R. R. Tolkien sent his first manuscript for The Hobbit in to his editors, they "corrected" his spelling of "dwarves" to what was then considered more correct, "dwarfs" (likewise "elves" to "elfs"). Tolkien corrected their correction, saying he spelled it exactly the way he wanted it spelled. And since then, "dwarves" and "elves" have become the more common spelling.

Also, just guessing, but who? me? may have spelt Arotle that way on purpose, as then it's Aristotle without the "ist" in the middle.
