I just finished reading Jonathon Strange & Mr. Norrell. Extremely excellent book, I'll highly recommend it to anyone. It's one of the candidates for the 2005 Hugo Award for Best Novel written in 2004.

The other nominees are (see http://www.interaction.worldcon.org.uk/pressr31.htm ):
# The Algebraist by Iain M. Banks (Orbit)
# Iron Council by China Miéville (Del Rey; Macmillan)
# Iron Sunrise by Charles Stross (Ace)
# Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke (Bloomsbury)
# River of Gods by Ian McDonald (Simon & Schuster)

Anyone read any of these? Which would you recommend I read next?

Have you read anything by Vernor Vinge? He's my current favorite. I think A Deepness in the Sky was his best, followed closely by A Fire Upon the Deep. Also, in his short story collection, the most recently written one (which I think is last in the book) was really excellent- I hope he turns it into a novel.
I started reading something by Cory Doctorow a while back and thought it was really great, but haven't finished it. I haven't had much time for fiction lately.
When I have time, I'll definitely be reading the Hugo winner and some or all of the nominees (from years I've missed too). Its just about the only award given to artists that means anything in my book.

Thanks, I haven't read those yet. Will check them out. JS&MN is most definitely worth reading. And I agree, the Hugo Awards are among the few awards that actually mean anything. Once you do have more time to read, along with JS&MN I'd recommend anything by Connie Willis. She's probably my favorite living author, and she's one of the most honored SF/F authors of all time (8 Hugo & 6 Nebula Awards). Probably my favorite novels by Willis are Doomsday Book (both Hugo & Nebula Best Novel) and To Say Nothing of the Dog (Hugo Best Novel). Read Doomsday Book first, because it's incredibly depressing & To Say Nothing of the Dog is incredibly hilarious and will help recover from said depression.
