A Rising Darkness

Prologue

The airlock blasted open and pieces of metal flew inwards through the cargo hold, hitting the crates that lined the interior of the spaceship. Through the smoke, a man emerged and walked slowly through the debris that littered the floor. Ores, goods and food were pushed aside as the man walked through the cargo hold towards the closed door to the cockpit. He bent down and placed a small device on the electronic lock then stood up and pulled a remote from his pocket. He tapped a few keys and the device began whirring. Numbers began to appear above the electronic lock, seemingly floating in the air. Soon the small device pinged in time with the electronic lock and the door slid upwards with the hiss of hydraulics.

The man peered inside and fumbled around the edges of the door.

The cockpit lights blinked on and the destruction became clear. Consoles were burnt out, service panels were ripped off and electrical fires blazed in the countless circuits that connected the systems throughout the ship. The man sat down at the pilots chair, amazingly unharmed compared to it's surroundings, and searched for a console that still functioned. None were.
He pulled out a miniature display and plugged it into one of the sockets below the main display. His screen flickered and came to life.
Before him was a battered man, clearly the pilot of the vessel. Behind him was the closed door leading to the cargo bay, It's metallic surface reflecting the small fires in the small cabin.

"This is the last message of Captain Ullin Cray." the figure said "By the time you hear this I will have died, but the information I commit to the data banks of this ship could mean the deaths of millions."
The man slumped back into the seat in disbelief while the captain's recorded message continued.
"To understand how I came across this information, I must start my tale a few months ago, when I was fresh from the Space-flight Academy."
The Captain's eye's glazed over as memories flooded back, and the man watched as he began his story...
