And at last Space Quake came to an end...

Oct 25, 2004 Archon link
At last, after countless hours spent in my faithful tri-flare Valkyrie exchanging dumbfire rockets with fellow rocketeers, the days of Space Quake came to an end. Most don't miss it. I do.

The days of Space Quake, as it is so rudely spoke of, was a time when weeeks of trading and killing bots was not required to duke it out high above Sector 11, guns blazing and explosions of the rocket type so badly hated and so highly loved raging around you. This topic is a recognition to those times. A milestone to recall them.

I miss the sector 9 and 7 battles

I don't miss tri flare valks, I missed the battles when people in hogs, vults and spamming rags would all go nuts.

And I still think it would be in guilds interest to make a second game that was basically 3.1 all over again except of course now it would be way less buggy because the ancient bugs of the past hath long been squashed. but it would appeal to all the Quakers who just wnat stuff to die heh. I would probably buy both because i like to fly around with an RPG stick up my butt WC privateer style but I also like to kill everything that moves WC kilrathi saga style!

2 genres, 1 engine, sell it for cash!

GOD I wish it was back. I am an FPS ADDICT. I can't get enough of it. I currently don't play Vendetta. I only racked in probably 10 hours max on the new universe.

Yeah im buying it ;).

I know a lot of people have wanted Vendetta to become very RPG oriented. Although some pretty cool stuff have been implemented along the years, for some reason I still deeply miss the days of 3.0.x and 3.1.x. Sure there were only nine sectors and only three ships per nation, but damn was it a lot of fun to just get into the action and have an immense amount of teamwork for CTF.

Things I particularly miss from the old days include the following:

-Choice of five types of weapons: mines, rockets, missiles, plasma, laser. Okay, so the variety was low but they were all very well balanced with each other. Despite the lack of variety, everyone seemed to have their own preferences and they seemed to do quite well with them. Duels seemed to be more fun this way, at least IMO. Nowadays it's always someone who has a trick up their sleeve due to license levels.

-Unique ships per nation. Each nation actually had a unique look and identity. They still do, but increased availability of ships has sort of blurred that distinct look of nations. In addition, because each nation was comprised of three classes of ships, they were all equal and contained no balance issues. Yes, believe it or not I used both the heavy and light ship classes very effectively during combat. They both once had a place in the game!

-Boost tapping. Sure it was probably unintentional, but it helped balance the ships out by giving some of the lower agility ships a chance to escape. A higher agility ship pilot who was less experienced in boost tapping could easily fall behind to a lower class bomber pilot who was very experienced with boost tapping. I know I used to be against it at first, but now I see it as a skillful method of piloting ships.

-Stationary turrets. I don't know about you but the uber NPCDEFs have really killed the fun of invading enemy territories. Sure it helps protect newbies, but it has gotten to the point where if you're in anything less than a Valkyrie or a Vulture, you're pretty much toast. Stationary turrets offered a fair and dramatic sense of enemy defenses, not found with today's NPCDEFs which just shout "BS UBER AI!!!"

Of course 3.0.x and 3.1.x weren't exactly perfect builds either. More exploits and glitches existed back than that made newbie killing more possible. But for the most part I found fair and fun gameplay to be much more common back in the day. If by some miracle Guild Software makes a "Lite" version of Vendetta containing the universe of 3.2 (19 sectors?) but the same exact gameplay features of 3.1.x, I would be thrilled to plunk down some money for a cheaper monthly fee to pay for this "deathmatch" style Vendetta.

listening to you guys rant about the vendetta 3.x days makes me wish i had been around then. how about vendetta dethmatch be released for you alpha's (and maybe some beta's?) after the 6 month update? kind of a special treat for those who helped vendetta become what it is..... and also for those of us who are plain curious! :)

just a thought.

Don't let the reminiscing fool you. People complained horribly about nothing to do, griefing, balance, etc. and begged for the features we have now. Some of the things people missed will likely return in some form.

Actually, we still scream for balance, the recent introduction of mass didn't exactly make things.. even.

I think the code people are on the right track. There's more to life than combat.
