Developing Context

Every game has a contextual base. By this I mean a selection of literature upon which the game's universe is based. This allows assumptions to be made, and a story to be built. For example, take Starcraft. Its contextual bases are, in no particular order:

-Close Encounters of the Third Kind
-The War of the Worlds
-Alien(s)
-WWII
-Warcraft(II)

and some others. What I'd like to do is build a list of contextual reading/viewing/playing for those who wish to immerse themselves in Vendetta's world. A list of books, movies, games, art or whatever whose designs reflect the design ethic of the Vendetta Universe. What would these works be?

I have a few suggestions:

starting obvious:

-Star Wars
-Asteroids (the game)
-Red/Green/Blue Mars novels
-WWII Aerial Combat
-Starship Troopers (book/movie?)

add your own. Devs, what sources have you been using to create your universe? Which works are your models?
