It would be nice if the devs could implement a system whereby within the confines of the NW event, or perhaps a series of sectors established for such events, everyone not of your nation would come up as unfriendly, with no exceptions.
I have a plugin called TargetButton, which works like the target nearest enemy button, except that it considers everybody who is not in my group and/or guild to be an enemy regardless of hostility, depending which toggles are activated. I normally leave it set to consider groupies friendly, and everybody else an enemy. Works great for Nation War or any fight where I'm actually grouped with my allies. Better to disable it when doing hive/border skirmishes though, since the allied npcs are ungrouped. I thought I had published it, but it seems I forgot. I'll do that later today.

I just use TCS/MakeFriends to set everyone except group members as hostile.
Saying there shouldn't be a unencumbered grey team is like saying that proms and valks should be banned together. It misses the point.
1v1v1s want too strongly to become 2v1 which is not fun or fair. 1v1v1v1 works better. Since there is (or at least was) a relatively cohesive "grey" contingent I thought it worked well to let them be the fourth group. But who comprises a fourth group is flexible, I think. In my perfect world teams would be shuffled and balanced every time but some people experience paroxysms when asked to track teams without color coded guidance, so we endeavor to find compromises.
Unaligned means not aligned. Unaligned does not mean aligned against.
Pirren: for the record I have never considered myself to be a pirate. I like to think that I'm playing space-quake. I don't know if that makes me more or less delusional than those who enjoy pretending to don internetspaceshippirate garb.
I broke even in the long run hosting NW. Enough people were happy to donate when asked.
NW is clearly not in a position to add disincentives to attendance.

In a perfect world, 3 teams would fight as 3 teams, but NW leaders do have the annoying habit to form pacts with other groups (this still happens with the grey team, but is somewhat mitigated). Perhaps rather then making faction requirements for grey, an individual could be told they can only fight for the team they fought for the previous NW. I.E. Maalik fights for grey one week, and would therefore only be able to participate as grey the next week. If Maalik chose to "sit on out" he would be free to choose UIT or Grey the next NW he participates in. This would allow the grey team to remain flexible, but get rid of the annoying tendency for some people to jump on the bandwagon onto which ever team seems most likely to win. Of course, without a regular, dedicated host its far too complicated and pointless.
PS I am not intending to accuse anyone of being a fair-weather nationalist, its just one of the complaints I've heard about grey in the past, though I've not seen it happen (in a problematic fashion) for a very very long time.

Personally, I wouldn't mind if there were different levels in the NW too. e.g Newb, Vet, and super-Vet (don't quote me on those) I would wonder how many people would get involved in NW if they knew they could fight others of a similar skill level. The problem with the current one is that it's usually populated only by guys who PvP all the time. Opening it up would likely attract more people to what should be one of the most popular events in VO.
Maalik, imho one the problem is horde of yellow newbs in Grey team, that try to create new type of "guild wars" from nation war.. and that should actually fight for UIT. Where's the deadline? Why should we accept them all just because of weird tag, especially when even guild description declares in the first sentence "La Familia is not a pirate organization". No difference between FAMY and PA. Basically famy's just part of the grey phoenix alliance.
IMHO, guild tag should mean nothing in NW. No guild fighting, no guild wars. Maybe let grey team leader whether to decide accept or no? But it may not work as well.

lol, it's ovious, if one team has got more members, than all other together, then the biggest group will be the main target.
When I have to choose between red and blue targets, blue die first.
Or another situation from NW, when I left alone against 4 anti-pirates in different teams, they decided to kill me first and thus gave unfair advantage to one of teams. So, at least two persons that agro on me did this just for vendetta and to have pk on me, not for the win. And I don't brag about these situations, that they're "unfair". No, -- exactly this makes NW interesting.

This thread is a perfect example of the PROBLEM with allowing a grey team: deciding who is and isnt a "grey". Itani, Serco, and UIT are clear cut and simple. If your name is blue you're on the Itani team, if it's red you're on the Serco team, if you're yellow you're on the UIT team. Done. If you want to fight on another team, use an alt.
PS: Thanks, Bojan for being even more hard-line about this than I am. :)

Pirren, you broke the thread :P When you get a chance, add a [ /i] at the end of your quote.

I think at least one nation war should be run without a grey team, forcing pilots to work for their nation. They could always take the assassins route and attack from the inside. Might make a new tactic for nation war, lol
"No difference between FAMY and PA. Basically famy's just part of the grey phoenix alliance."
Sorry, this is not true. There are MANY differences between FAMY and PA. One of our current members who was once in FAMY has even stated many times how many differences there are and even stated that it was his belief that FAMY was a pirate guild and he was told when he joined that FAMY was a pirate guild.
Also, the commander of FAMY is a pirate and the Lt. of FAMY is a pirate. I remember many times that people have stated that an officer/commander of a guild represents a guild. So if I, as commander of PA, engaged in nationalistic actives (as allowed by my guild) PA would quickly be called a nationalist guild (this is also a reason I gave up nationalistic activities as Lt., because I was getting alot of grief put on PA for doing Border Skirmishes in Deneb as a pass time).
So, while it's an interesting thought that FAMY isn't a pirate guild, it's more likely that the people running it are pirates and that they mooch off the rest of their guild members, get their members targeted by other guilds, and then state on 100 how their members are their minions or bitches and give them everything they have.
Just sayin though, PA and FAMY are nothing alike and I would like to clear that up please.

Pirren, theres a difference between a pilot prioritizing his targets and two teams agreeing before hand to not attack each other and collaborate. When I run the Serco team, we honestly don't prioritize anyone or any "colour." I don't expect everyone to do the same that I do, but before your time there was a serious problem with NAPS (non-aggression pacts); in the very large NW's of the days of old there really wasn't a large numerical advantage for one side over the others normally, but when two groups would agree to only fight the third, the third was SOL before the fight even started. I personally (as a matter of honour) refuse to ever enter into a NAP, and no, I'm not saying they should be banned or that things should be "fair;" I'm simply responding to maalik's post by saying that the grey team only marginally prevented the phenomenon from occurring.
Seragyn: what do you think made the difference then? i'd hate to see dynamics revert to the old silliness.
The old NW was, in my opinion, more a matter of easy money than one of pride. When the prize dropped 90% attendance plummeted, but those attending tended to be the people who fought for the sheer joy of imagining, implementing, or simply being a part of large (in vo terms) group combat strategies. There is (at least on my part, I can't speak for everyone) a lot of pride involved in leading a team of individuals into a fight where they can only rely on each other and coming out victorious. With a 100million prize there is quite a bit of incentive for pilots to: A. make deals that will give them the highest possible chance of winning by eliminating at least one team. B. make deals that ensure they survive in the first place; C. make deals that ensure as few people survive as possible (as almost all the NW's I participated in before the change only paid survivors). With a 10 million prize (which is less then the average individual survivor of the old NW could expect to win) this incentive is virtually eliminated.
To sum it up: Winning is now a matter of pure pride, not how people make a living. Winning on your own teams abilities and the strength of your tactics is far more rewarding then winning because you NAPed against other teams.
EDIT: I have no freak'n clue why my shit is all italic, bold, and underlined, and can't be assed to fix it

Read up. It's all italic because people keep leaving tags open and the forum doesn't catch that.
I'm fine with the 3 sides, since it's clear who's what nation, but the grey nonsense causes problems.

If the person is not in your group, kill it. If the person is not a white dot on the radar, kill it. If the person gets in front of you, kill it.
If the person didn't fit in your group, nag the devs some more.

The only thing I want is grey to not be a team, such as before. Let the evil-doers and the heroes fight side by side like before grey was introduced. Make it a real nation war, forget grey.

tarenty, actually we can try to change something this NW, at least once. Maybe let's try without grey at all if no one wants to filter it. Because I don't see any point at present rainbow-grey team.
Or let's mix, one week with grey team, another without.
Lol, Rin's nick is still bold italic :D
