Kur'gan statement about "rust".
Rust is a lie. I can log out of this game for 1 year or more and come back and remember how to fly. Then people PM me after a fight and claim rust? Serious case of STFU.
VO is like riding a bike, you either can do it, or you cannot. TYVM>

Snake is a snake.

I would say it's more like snowboarding. You might be able to pop a kicker but step out into the backcountry and see what's happening... one week makes a difference, one year makes a difference.
Speaking purely of VO, I find my reflexes are far too slow after two weeks without practice when competing against well known pilots. It definitely feels like rust exists. On the other hand, basic skills like situational awareness and using your ship's momentum, energy, and attitude in conjunction with the distance to your target never seems to go away.

Like riding a bike you say? Perhaps.
Rust definitely exists. Playing VO at a high level is like a sport in that if you don't stay in practice, your abilities will deteriorate a bit. But it only takes a few quality fights to eliminate the bulk of it. What is left is only evident when fighting people who are very close to your own skill level, and that comes back quickly enough.
There are certainly people who will grab at any excuse to explain a loss though. Rust, lag, distractions, whatever. I succumb to that sometimes too, but I try not to.

I find rust mostly manifests itself with weapons where there's more "feel" involved - I can step away for a year and come back near 100% effective in a Gauss vult, but my flare throwing abilities consistently suck until I've invested some time in them.
