Petition of the removal of all handheld "Gauss Rifles" or "Neutron Pistols" or whatever from roleplay!

Hokay I'm taking a page from Firefly here, maybe, but I always thought the reason plain old guns aren't used in Vendetta (with the exception of rails - which is probably because xith is super dense) is because armor technology on ships has advanced to the point that regular bullets would just bounce off of it... however, this is obviously not the case with man-to-man combat and even still, why would you unnecessarily burden yourself with having to fire shots that don't exceed 215 m/s? And even still, the lightest known energy guns are 100kg... not very viable for pistols. Even if you're an uber Serco... there's still the velocity matter (please note that using a 100kg energy weapon manually as a makeshift tool or weapon is not out of the question for especially strong characters).

So... pretty much all of the energy weapons are artillery or vehicle-mounted weapons. Bullet-using guns on the ground and lasers in the sky is the coolest way to go, aye? All in favor say "aye".

fail.

they are tinier, doing much less damage and you think too much.

You need to either drink less, or drink a lot more, before posting, Chaak. I haven't decided which yet.

I'd take a Mosin Nagant over a VO neutron blaster in a firefight any day.

Hehehe, does that include less velocity, as well? What about the power cell? Is that 100kg strapped to your back or being tugged behind you on wheels?

This thread is fun.

Erm...its usually Neutron Rifles for the handheld DEW stuff in RP, although Ion and Phase guns show up occasionally.. Gauss-type weapons tend to be kinda rare in this context, and usually appear as shoulder-carried weapons when they are present, as is befitting their weight.

Besides that, ceramic-composite pistols, submachine guns, and shotguns are fairly common in RP (especially among the pirates). So are those Gyrojet Rockets (GyRocks) which someone introduced awhile back; those have gained some popularity too. Most of the energy weapons belong to the on-station rent-a-cops.

As for me, when I RP my (defunct) UPK stuff, I remain adamant that funding has gotten so bad that they've downgraded all the way down to lasguns. Inexpensive, reliable, and virtually no penetration against modern armor whatsoever. :p

Hokay, that makes a little more sense lol. I don't have as much of a problem with phase or ion rifles, I think the neutron weapons would probably be shoulder mounted, and the most miniature form of a Gauss Cannon would be more of a... well... cannon.

Loke! Use the targeting computer! That's what it's there for: advanced weaponry designed to help you hit tiny targets!

The only problem I see here is that when I say I have a Guass Rifle, I don't actually mean a gun that shoots giant guass torpedos, I mean one of em Rifles the 'Rines in SC use.

Anyways, +1.

large-calibre heavy-duty triple-shot Corvus-make customised gauss handcanon

If this is the offending sentence, you will instantly notice that it is a part of a daydream:) Thus the slightly over-stated weapon's description:)

I can see the allure of a gauss rifle as well as the interesting aspects of the neutron pistol (I invoke the Star Wars Blasters!). The weapon would, however, have to fit in and have a purpose. Like the above mentioned:)

vIsitor, GyRocks ROCK! That distinctive sound (stolen shamelessly from the Warhammer 40k universe) is fantastic! That is why I always use 'em:)

I do not think that you should equate the ship's borne weaponry in the same category as the hand weapons, regardless of misnomers. I would hope that they, at a time where we can fly spaceships on a regular basis, clone people and do all the VO stuff we do, that some git has come up with a powerpack that is lighter than 100 kg and that energy weapons might just be man-portable, or even sexy:)

This discussion IS fun!

Ah, nah Hortan, I didn't have a problem with that one. 'Twas pretty obvious it was a distorted fantasy.

I think one example of an offender is Shlim's story, there are some other ones but that was the most recent.

You don't like hand -held energy weapons in VO stories?

That's cool. Please just go wrap yer lips around one of these, and make yer big toe useful. Thanks.

Don't mind the stand-off muzzle brake, won't hurt a bit.

Wait... I don't think I did that right. How many more do you have?
Mar 12, 2010 Dr. Lecter link
Like that one? Just one, though I put a Knoxx stock on in place of the Mossberg hard plastic pistol grip, replaced the safety with a steel, extended spur one, and threw a +1 mag extension cap on it. I doubt I'll ever use the muzzle brake for door breaching, but it makes a great impact weapon and the extra mass of the heavy-wall barrel gives it a pleasing heft and pointability.

Lector, I think you should add a lasersight too. The task that something like this is most likely to get used for in real life is a response to the sudden arrival of some "uninvited guests." In a situation like that, most people are VERY likely to miss or at least not hit an optimal (ie lethal) area. I know that sounds crazy at point blank distances with a "scattergun", but it seems to happen a bunch. Adding a spot to show you where you are pointing might mean the difference between you living (to let me try to shoot you in VO) and all of us wondering why you suddenly left the game and never came back.
