The merits of /ignore with respect to incendiary comments
To quote the points made in this thread: http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/7/22369#277249
I said the following:
I don't mean for this to begin a flame war, but rather to explain my "hey newbs: /ignore peytros" comments in-game. The reason I suggest newbs ignore you, peytros, is that while your comments may be more civil than they used to be, they are still vulgar and full of profanity (not to mention less than kind words towards women). Such talk can seriously turn off newbies, and they need to know that they don't need to hear such comments if they don't want to. My actions are towards the end of keeping new players so that our playerbase may grow; that is all.
Pointsman responded:
It is incendiary to advocate that a specific someone's thoughts are not worth hearing and detrimental to the community as a whole. You don't have to give names when you make newbs aware of /ignore. "If someone is obnoxious to you then /ignore them" is enough, I think.
I responded:
And when a specific someone's posts are themselves incendiary? I do not believe it incendiary or detrimental to the community to advocate that incendiary or vulgar or abusive comments be /ignored. Seems something of a double-standard. If a newbie doesn't mind the specific player's statements... then he won't /ignore.
Now, to continue the discussion, as given the comments in the previous thread it seems one is warranted: I am fine with saying "hey newbs, check out /ignore" if that will cause less strife. I would appreciate it, however, if people such as myself were not lambasted for calling incendiary comments what they are, and advocating that such comments be /ignored. Moreover, it would be best if the people responsible for these incendiary or profane comments would keep them off of 100 at the very least; neither I nor others need to hear about your taste for women's genitals.

Telling n00bs to /ignore a player they haven't ever met is mean spirited and wrong. You may not be attacking them directly or talking shit on 100, instead you're unfairly impugning their character. It's no different than the vote mute campaigns of yesteryear. I'm nice to a lot of people and you never hear about it, then I encounter a newb and he says "You're that asshole everyone is telling me about" and I've never met this guy but he's already formed a negative opinion of me his 4th hour in the game. I didn't do that or cause that, you guys did and it's ridiculous that you feel justified doing it.
Impavid, I only inform newbs about /ignore-ing another player when that player is being excessively rude or vulgar on 100. I have not and will not ask a player to preemptively /ignore another player.
EDIT: As per Impavid's edit (which involves all that appears after the word "yesteryear"): I do not badmouth CHRN members to newbs (though I do tell them that CHRN is a pirate guild and to run if they see one), so please don't complain to me about such things. Furthermore, such badmouthing is in fact not the topic at hand; make your own thread.

You are speaking only for yourself now? Maybe put a little *star* by it or something? You know damn well I'm referring to you as a group and not you the individual.
/me calls the ACLU
Ryan, what? How is that relevant at all?
Let's stick to the topic, guys. It seemed from a few posts that there was something to discuss here. If there isn't... then Whistler, please do lock.

I would divide it this way. If you are helping out a new player, guiding them through the entrance to VO, then merely pointing out that there are trolls, and that /ignore can be successfully used to defuse them, is sufficient. If a new player is being actively harassed by a troll, then it makes sense to tell them they can free themselves from that person by using /ignore.
However, if it seems someone exists solely to troll, and we do get them occasionally, and they are currently active and not muted, it might make sense to let a new player know about them beforehand. I do not consider any of the participants in this discussion in that class, though pey used to be (he got better!). I'm talking about the dedicated trolls, who make an account and spout vitriol and filth nonstop.

I agree that new players should know that they can /ignore other players to avoid objectionable comments. HOWEVER, I also agree that naming a player as an example is needlessly provocative. Such a move distracts from the supposed point that /ignore is available.
Whistler touched on this, but I think it's important enough to bear repeating.
Atice, you are not a dev or moderator, and you do not have parental rights over newbs who come into the game. It is not your right to decide whose comments are too offensive for newbs to hear and whose are not. If, in your opinion, a player's comments reflect poorly upon the community, take your own advice and just ignore them.

I admitted as such in the other thread.

I'm aware. I do not force newbs to ignore people FFS. I make a suggestion.

When I advise others to do something, I do take my own advice as well.
On a different note, it seems that suggesting that a newb ignore a specific player is beyond the tastes of those present. As such, I'll re-phrase when teaching the newbs about /ignore.
On the other hand, I do wish to re-iterate that neither I nor others need to hear about a player's taste for women's genitals. Do keep it off 100.

I'm trying to imagine a situation in which I would need such information. The best I can come up with is sort of a Sherlock Holmes mystery where....but I digress.
I think we can safely lock this as a shining example of one hotly debated thread that actually made it to resolution.
Unless some asshat posted while I was typing this.
