Shades of Gray

Jun 28, 2007 Roda Slane link
Roda contemplated what he wanted to accomplish. He had developed a dislike for the superfaction triad's policies of factionalism before all else, even to the point of preclusion of justice. He felt that an honest pilot was an honest pilot, regardless of faction. But the superfactions made no distinction between honest or treacherous. Having witnessed fellow factionalist commit crimes in the name of patriotism, Roda rebelled against systems that placed anything above recognition of peaceable and honest pilots. Labeled an outlaw by his native faction for exercising retribution against treacherous "patriots", Roda was now a full time resident of gray space.
Gray was a harsh place. Every pirate, assassin, and criminal in the galaxy either called it home, or at least visited. Prevailing judiciary was the law of the gun, and Roda had become well versed in the relevant terminology. But he could see that given time and support, a new system could be established here. A system where a crime was a crime, regardless of faction or economic interest. Where all pilots where inherently equal, until they proved themselves otherwise. Roda knew there would be great resistance to such a system. The pirates wanted gray to themselves. The superfaction triad did not want any other power besides themselves. They didn't even want each other. And they certainly didn't want any system that challenged their self centric policies. But Roda detected hints of pilots that could see beyond the propaganda of the superfactions. Pilots that could think for themselves, and judge others based solely on their actions. He detected an awareness of ethics and principles of equality in many of the trader guilds.
Roda wondered if it was yet time to start building. Many of the peaceable guilds might quickly support any system that promoted equal evaluation of agressors. The trader guilds would seek to support free trade. Many true anti pirates would gladly shed there factionalism in pursuit of their prey.
Roda knew there would be many reasons for others to seek to place their own spin on any rising power, but Roda carefully set in his own plans to push the factionalist out of gray. At least the pirates where equal opportunity killers. But the sphere of influence of the factionalist was perhaps on the verge of meeting it's greatest threat ever. And Roda continued to calculate how he might increase that threat...
