Switching from joystick to mouse.

I had an old joystick to play this game with, when I played it back in december.

Now I am thinking about purchasing it again for a month are so, but my joystick is completely messed up right, so that I will be forced to play it with mouse+keyboard combo. Is it actualy hard to master it this way. How many people play this with mouse+keyboard combo, and how long took it them to master it?

I have played another space game, and found that playing with mouse is better for aiming, does that one count for vendetta to?

Heh, I play on my lap top with a key board and a track pad. One piece of advice don't knock combat binds. :P

I use the kybd/mouse combo and prefer it for aiming and overall comfort.

I've never played vendetta with a joystick.

What's your definition of "master"?

kb/mouse forevar. A single joystick may be ok for a flight sim, but this is space, not a 747.

There will be a public hanging of Borb at B8 today, for using combat binds. All are welcome to attend.

I use a mouse and Keyboard. I played quake, Duke nukem 3d, and Descent with mouse/keyboard, so I'm used to it. I just ordered a Nostromo gaming keypad to try out in place of a keyboard, because with so many buttons needed for Vo Im always hunting. Hopefully this thing will make that easier.

I used to play with keyboard/mouse.

I found it a problem switching to a joystick, but i did.

Then I bounced it off the floor after a uhum, fight, hehe.

Then I got a playstation to usb converter.

I love it, but even though I can dodge like hell (can be crucial) my aim isnt as good as it used to be.

but then again, I did take a break

I too play with a mouse, single button, no keyboard binds. Not to hard to get used to though I have not used a joystick with VO yet.

I use a mouse (Microsoft Optical Wheel) and keyboard (SGI PS/2). It feels more natural, since I'm used to playing FPS games, not flight sims. I've seen plenty of people using joysticks as well, so I guess it's really whatever fits your style.

I recently changed over to using a joystick/mouse combo. I use the joystick in my left hand, for strafing and rolling, and have configured the various buttons on it for acceleration/deceleration, flight assist toggle, closest enemy, turbo and brake....all within reach of my thumb. The trigger on it is for the third weapon control.
My trackman mouse is used for aiming, primary and secondary weapon fire and the center wheel button for the activate control.
With this setup I only occasionally have to use the keyboard and I've found it to really help in dueling/fighting.

Edit: I just swapped the flight assist button on the joystick with the activate button on the mouse. Now I can more easily pop in and out of flight assist while in a duel.....

O.o, nice setup, Beamrider. If I can ever get VO to recognize my joystick, I'm gonna try that.

I switched to a joystick that I found in my house (somebody must have given it to me?) and after taking ages to get used to it, found it incredibly useful. Having the flight assist toggles etc so easy to access provided a lot more control, and the joystick was great with a centurion/gauss combo. I think the gauss' aim helped a lot though because as soon as I switched back to neuts or flares I instinctively reached for the mouse to get more accuracy. Now I have gone back to using a vult/neut combination and a joystick hinders more than it helps. While it would be nice to have more accessability to controls, a mouse and keyboard is in most cases, far more effective. I suppose it depends on your ship preference and playing style.
Anyway passed the joystick on to somebody else who might want it!

However everytime I fight a rev-c with both of us using a lot of flight assist I wish I had it back. Having to sweep your mouse metres across the desk just to keep your target on the screen is not very amusing...

Dual Joysticks

Left hand joystick = strafe
Right hand joystick = pitch/roll/yaw

Yes mouse is better for aiming, but I don't care. I'm having way to much fun playing Star Trek. :D

I use a joystick, don't like the mouse/keyboard combo, I've never been very good with the whole FPS style of control, and I think that has a lot to do with my choice.

I find aiming much easier with the stick than when I've been forced to use a mouse, but it could just be due to more practice with a stick.

Bad Martin! Star Trek ships are NOT controlled by joysticks. Only abominations would have you believe that.

abominations, and also movie number 9 :P

Man that JS riker was using to fly the ship was *tiny* lol. You'd think it'd have more buttons :P
