Ok, recently, a lot of people (INCLUDING ME!!!) having gotten really huffy about something or other in Vendetta. It seem's everyone's kind of on an edge. I'd guess it may be because some are frustrated by some ship balances, and also because we're all on our toes about the Frigate update. (Which is coming out so soon that it should no longer be a problem.)
First, I'd like to formally apologize on behalf of me and everyone else. Hey, we're still playin the game? It can't be that bad...=P I think we should all just take a step back and look at the game as a whole, not scrutinize every detail. (Don't get me wrong...scrutinizing details is extremely important, but for this post, let's take a step back.)
Second, and what this post is about:
I was thinking VO recently, and was wondering what sets it apart from other online games? Why is it that after playing Vendetta, all other online games pale in comparison?
So I came up with a few reasons, and I'd like to see what you guys think too.
1. *Obviously* The Devs. (And this is NOT just a suck-up reason. It's completely true!!!)
In how many other online games do the developers actually INPUT WHAT WE, THE PLAYERS, ASK???? And in what other online games to the developers actually come on to ask us if anything's going wrong after an update? In what game do the developers actually reply on the message board...frequently!? In what game do the developers actually care about something other than mass-marketing and making loads of money (such as the quality of the game, and the *making it better*) In VO, it's like getting an expansion pack every two weeks or so...for only $10 a month! (That's about 2 expansion packs for $10. Wow that's good) And it just keeps getting bigger, and better. It's kinda like a gift that just keeps on giving. Or receiving interest on a bank account. These devs put so much effort into making this game awesome, and I think they deserve a round of applause.
/me applauds
2. The Players
What a cool group of players we've got in Vendetta. I mean, *for the most part* everyone's extremely helpful and nice. People are nice to n00bs (ok, maybe mentor ratings have a little effect...), and there aren't any giant flame wars here or in-game. People get IRC just to talk to the other players! If they can't play the game, they still have fun just talking to the players! That is a sign of an awesome community. As a n00b, I was always poor. A friend jokingly called me "The Beggar." But everyone would give me money! I'd be flyin around Itani space, killing bots in my wraith, and getting poor. "Hey, could you spare some credits?" "Sure, how's 100,000?" (That was a lot in my n00b days) If only real life was like Vendetta...wow. We'd have solved world hunger a loooooong time ago.
3. Attitude Regarding Age
Another thing I love about Vendetta is that everyone is treated equally regardless of their age. The commander of my guild, the person who's orders I follow, could be 14 IRL. Regardless, I'd still follow his orders. No one is talked down to, and people are respected for their skill and maturity, not their age. Once again, if real life was only like Vendetta...I would have really liked to vote when I was 14!!! And get people to follow my orders!!!Even now they don't...=(

Agreed. Vendetta is still the only game that I am well and truly addicted to. And that is very much due to the community and developer interaction. I have made many friends in Vendetta and invited many friends to try Vendetta.
The sheer amount of what you can do in a group or by yourself (but always more fun in a group) is impressive to say the least. Where as in some other online games "group activities" boil down to "Lets go over to this area and hack away at this (insert small animal here) for an hour" where as Vendetta it can be trading, mining, pvp, pve, ctc, frigate, guild wars, pirating, pirate evasion, and every month much much more.
As long as you take it all into account and don't get overly picky about the details Vendetta is the best game you can buy.

VO is only the second online game I've ever played. It's the first of the genre for me.
The other game was the free America's Army. The game actually sucks for noobies because as soon as you're done training, you're going head-to-head with pimple-boosted nerd killing machines. I gave up on pvp games that very instant, but kept relaunching AA one in a while just to enjoy the relativelly nice graphics.
Disclamer: I'm no gamer. I've not seen much of the genre.
Not being a gamer, I had given up long before AA on searching for a game adequate for me. To this day, even with the VO hours piling up, the game that's got the most CPU time is still solitaire. VO is catching up though.
I heard of VO from a Mac web site (macbidouille.com). Downloaded it. Tried it. Paid it. Played it. I'm still not sure why I still play. One thing for sure, I enjoy it a lot.
I think it's because I have the ability to choose the level of adrnaline that gets pumped into my veins. If I simply want to mellow out, I do a mission or mine a bit. Sometimes, I just want to vent frustration (my dev job does that to me) and botting is just right in those occassions. Sometimes, I just want to socialize. While VO's chat system(s) are crude (read: more than adequate, but nothing like videoconferencing or .Mac-style chatting), they do provide one heck of a place to find people with related hobbies (VO being the main one).
Sometimes, I simply want to play-the-game and act my grade/rank/position as part of IDF and then I go for the CtC operations. I'm no big player in that field (nothing like some of the vet players), but I'm learning the grades. it's the one thing that gives me the extra adrenalyne rush.
Why do I like VO? I think VO makes me like it.

I haven't played really in months (I get on for a few mins every now and then to see what it's like, but nothing long, I'm using my trial) but I still look at the site very often, just because it's fun to hear about what's happening and to see what players are doing, talk to other players I met, and laugh if there's something funny (and fortunately there normally is something funny). Vendetta has a wonderful community, and I couldn't ask for a better group to know.
The game is great.
I had actually gotten bored with just running back and forth trading and botting... Then I joined a guild. Things are so much more interesting with a guild since you actually have an objective.

Over the years i've played a couple online, most notably EverQuest. EverQuest was fine, for those days you were bored out of your skull. EverQuest would offer you a new zone to explore for the low price of $50! Vendetta is going to offer many new 'zones' to explore for the low price of $10 per month, along with more updates and such. Vendetta is nicer because the community is, usually, very nice. I am also playing World of Warcraft, while it is a really good game, it doesn't really feed your need for a space game, also I've heard many bad things about the GM's over there. ;)
Actually there was nothing wrong with the GM's at WoW people there just like to complain and bad mouth othes.
The GM's cazn only do what they are limited to as well so there are some things beyond their powers and most of the time it is people just not listening to the GM's first warning.
Yes I do agree that the game is nicely priced and that adds to its appeal. The pricing and the fact that this is twitch based combat were the deciding factors for playing VO over EVE.
WoW wasnt exciting; it was mostly the high levels griefing the lowbies and unlike those sorts of games VO allows anyone to have a chance when attacked.

it began as "i just want to fly around and shoot things". then i was shot and killed. then i leveled and went after the person who killed me because "revenge is at hand!!"... and was killed again. repeat this process a few hundred times. somewhere in that process the person who killed me repeatedly invited me into a guild and there i met a lot of fun and cool people. that is how i became addicted. problem is my whole vendetta life revolved around getting good enough to kill that person and i finally accomplished that a few weeks ago.... so now i must resort to preying on the rest of you! >:D
so then to sum it up... i like shooting, i like (other people's) explosions, and i enjoy the company i keep... what more can you ask for? oh... that special ship for beta and alpha users.. right i remember now :)

I'm not addicted! I just have a healthy understanding of the importance of Vendetta-Online.
yeah I'm not addicted I am just simply forced to come back to Vendetta Online because of mental state beyond my control ;)
Well, it's clear to me that some of you are not appreciating *everything* VO offers. Special consideration needs to be paid to the patented "Digital-Optical Cocaine Feed" (D-OCF) technology that Guild Software has spent years and all their money developing. Without D-OCF, VO would be a 10 year-old and an 80 year-old bashing busses into each other in the single sector offered and John would be the only developer remaining.
It's due to D-OCF that both of you don't realize that you are the only two in here and the rest of us are carefully crafted NPCs and AI scripts...and yes, you are only playing in one sector. It's THAT good!!
Watch your bus...here he comes!!

I used to play EVE, and had remembered a topic about this game come up on the forums...I didnt play it then, but just recently (3 days ago) I downloaded, Got a trial account, and tried it. I really like it, the twitch based combat was one thing that got me hooked...
And from what Ive seen, the community is really great.

VO is the only game I play besides Enemy Territory, which, I actually haven't been playing as much (VO takes up too much time :-P). I suppose it also has to do with the fact that my system is 100% Linux.
That's what I really appreciate about VO, and Guild Software. The fact that they went the extra mile that most other game producers don't even bat an eye at: providing a product to a minority group. And my guess is that they did it even though they knew the turnout would be higher for other systems. I do hope that what Guild has done starts a trend in other producers to show that it's possible to roll a game for multiple systems.
Or better yet, they should just license from Guild :-P All the hard work has already been done for them.

I think a bus demo derby would be fantastic. Who would decline playing a game where we just smash into eachother :)

Okay enough with the binary.
RelayeR - Right Jon?
kihjin - I'm sure he would agree.
It should be something along those lines.
Okay that is the decoding so others won't waste their tiem with this anyway. Please don't bother decoding thigns in these threads sicne they are just spam and that is all.

I was sent an email to check out an article on the mac site, about this game called VO. My friend new I liked space combat games and thought I would like, and since I had just stopped EQ I was looking for something new to waste my time on. When I read that it was going to be the an MMORPG I was very interested to see what it was all about. I downloaded the 8h trial, played it to the end and then immediately drove to the bank to make sure I had money in the account to pay for a months subscription. Have not missed a month since. The combat is fun, thought the bots can get boring quickly if that's all you got going. But for me it's really just about being able to group up and take out those that would oppose us, though even that is starting to get boring too. I've stayed around simeply to see if the game will be more robust, and for the most part it is progressing, even if at a snails pace. For the most part the community is great, the graphics are ok, the interface is horrible, but the freedom to do whatever you want makes all that moot. Keep chugging along Dev's and lets get some more content asap!! B)

One word :
Statistics.
Statistics.
I like this game for the community, it is so tight knit that you feel like a family. But perhaps this shouldnt be so in a space game... Who knows...
What I like about EVE is the variety and excellent graphics.
