Rocket Changes

The devs are getting as impatient as the players.
Can't you people give it some time? You know, some of that "wait and see" sort of thing?

I dislike this. Now we have very few ships we canuse rockets and missles on effectively.

Considering that now the rockets/missles have an arming range all light ships can easily stay within close range to confuse the eyes of the heavier ship and just devastate it. The rockets and missles were our ability to keep them at a distance and allowed the larger ships to be effective.

This leaves rockets and missles only usable against queens and Frigates. Otherwise they might as well be spammed at the beginning of a fight and pray for a win since they are just deasd weight now.

I am aware that there were issues with the rocket ramming but it was possible to stay away from the rammers and it wasnt much of an issue. I do not consider this a fix to the issue but the creation of a new issue altogether. I beleive that ramming would have been very limited with the addition of new weaponry.

Although this may work as a solution to the ramming problem it is now a new issue and to make them useful again the speeds would need to be increases by a lot more (requiring a lot of skill to dodge) or at least allow them to destruct on impact.

So now we need a solution to make large ships useful for anything besides queen and cap ship fighting. I dont think modifying everything will lead to a solution but rather a larger choice in weaponry will be a better solution to things.

Daikaze, it is impossible to stay within the closest range, unless the shooter is in a moth.

yeah, basically now the rocket will explode behind the person getting rammed, instead of in front of them

Gives the person being "rammed" a bit more time to get out of the way though...

I still think you people need some serious 'give it some time.'
All this making of assumptions is making my head hurt. Why not have everyone that cares go play around with it for a week or so and THEN come back with a personal opinion not based on 'he said she said'?
This goes for all these balance "issues" by the way.

Genka above is the post I made based on playing it for a number of hours.

My reply wasn't based on the he said she said nnsense.

Rockets and missles are what Icommonly use and not typically used in ramming. I decided to post after a battle that could have gone differently w/o the proximity trigger. The enemy flew in close to try and get behind me and because I was using missles. When they were moving in I fired my missles and not 1 detonated and they easily avoided death. I am not complaining about my death but ratehr the fact that the missles were dead weight. At a distance they are easily dodged; at close range they won't even work.

The trigger has made missles of even less use than before. When fighting rocket ships it only reuires the player to stay in close and charge when the fire missles since they likely wont get the chance to arm themselves.

wait... do swarms have the proximity trigger?
Mar 16, 2005 Daikaze link
I could be wrong but it certainly seemed that way.

I would like to hope that I am wrong and that I misjudged my attack but as I had said it just didn't seem that way while fighting.

Besides even if they dont they will soon since then people will be using them in place of the rockets for ramming if they don't have the trigger. Also it wouldn't make enough sense why they wouldn't.

I think you misjudged.

Missiles, as opposed to rockets, are generally terrible for up-close fighting. Firing at an opponent that is close behind you or within 500m of you has always been a waste. Gems, the best of the lot, are really only effective when fired at a stationary target or one that is moving toward you, and only if fired within about 630-675m. The better pilots and pilots of more agile ships can get away even under the best conditions provided they are alert.

Its true, missiles *didnt* get effected by this, and are lame at the best of times although I can think of 1 pilot that managed to blat my hornet with gems (Dont ask why I was in a hornet)

This thread is about Rockets, 2 different things.

Well I tested yesterday my prom mk 2 and found it to be much more sluggish. It was already hard work to keep up with a rev c in a fight, specially turning was hard, now you cant keep up. So my new strategy: counterturn and rotate. That way I dont have constant fire on the enemy, but I get a few good shots at every turn/rotation. Of course I get hit alot more now and my "reserve armor" is way closer to the limit at the end of a fight many times.

Regarding the rockets: I used to use Sunflares as my last resort when a rev c comes too close to comfort, out turned me or shot me from the side. Even taking a self hit/damage from the splash, that kept enemies at distance so I can keep up with turning. Seems last night everyone came close because they thought now they can with the distance trigger. About 70% of my "self defense" flare shots at close range now dont trigger with the new setting. So I had to change my way of fighting. I use them more rarely now and I try to set up a good shot ahead of the rev c.. usually when he is accelerating away past me or almost toward me. That worked most of the time.

Also I feel the prom is slower now turboing, but that is not as much as a problem, it still does it fast enough to evade most incoming in a quick burst or to accelerate toward in a attack to go for a killshot with the AGT.

It took me a few hours to get used to the "new" prom. At first I was frustrated, because it seemed the changes had a big impact, but I have adapted now and it still is my ship of choice for now. :-)
