Please hit 'reload' on your browser - 'Duel Stats' should appear on your sidebar under 'Game', right after 'Cargo Captures'. These are some preliminary duel rating results - I'll be tweaking this over time. The individual player display could definitely use some work.
I still need to do some work to let you see what your rating is currently and what your opponent's rating is and how many points you can win or lose by dueling them, but this is a start.

This is really cool, I only wish it was on earlier, I so rarely use the duel command...
Ouch!
Now I suffer all those "you have left the sector" bugs... *Grmfs*
this stung:-(

I seem to be the only prolific dueller... :/
How do you handle duelwhores? (people who win 1,000 duels in an hour)

It's weighted against the history of the person they're duelling. If you're duelling someone who isn't very good (or has a terrible record) you won't increase in skill assessment.
We use the same statistical ranking algorithm used by the international chess consortiums to rank chess players. It's pretty neat. We'll also be adding in some other features for periodic "awards" for people at certain levels and stuff.. the dueling stats will be a work in progress for awhile.
It'll also be added to your Character Info screen and such, so people can see your duelling skill there.

so if you are a newbie and defeat eldrad you'll end in top 5?
or it would just mean you would rise 1 rank?
While if you are eldrad and defeat a newbie, you won't raise in rank but would only be dueling him for the other persons pleasure or your own sense of honour?
cheers

This fits in nicely with something our guild has planned as a community event starting next month.
Also I know you said you were working on the page some more, but might I suggest being able to search that list. This way people can find out how they shape up against everyone else without having to drill through several pages.

Oh, now the points DO matter...
fnugget only when you care about a rank :D
I never cared, I sucked anyway ;)

But Inc, look at No. 3 on the list, Klox, he's only fought people under 1000, and he topped all of the rest of us. Somethins up there.
Lonestar IS good and deserves to be up there. But according to his actual DUEL record he's only fought one player over 1400. And he has a 1600 ranking, somethings fishy here.
EDIT: by chance I also noticed that ? is under 1000. That's REALLY odd, seeing that he's never lost to a player under 1000.

Heh, teaching new players how to duel certainly helps your ranking.
I'm not better than Eldrad.

ELO rating in VO! Nice!
The ELO system in chess took a couple of years to be fully reliable.
On the Internet Chess Club you have a real rating only after the first 15 games (the 'k' factor that modulates the rating change after each game is progressively brought down to normal and new players have a 'provisional' tag on their rating). Also the rating there is already in place and accurate for the vast majority of the players.
When ICC set up a new category for ranking (like they did two or three years ago with their '5-minute game' rankings) with players starting more or less from scratch, they said that at least several weeks would be necessary for the ratings to stabilize.
So we should be patient.
[edit: here is a link the ICC help file explaining the basics http://www.chessclub.com/help/ratings ; I don't know if the Devs used this simplified method or a more elaborate system like Elo's]

I also was thinkin about it, there's another reason why its off.
In chess, the rankings are treated sequentially. if you're 900 and you beat another 900 player your rating may go up 50 points, but if
you continue beating 900 players you won't keep getting another 50 points. I think this is what happened with Klox, All the rating modifications were applied at once, so 22*40 or roughtly 1600.
you have to apply them one by one.
I also don't know that this will balance itself out like on ICC. Since certain people don't duel much.
If it IS balanced, then points are conserved. There will be some rating inflation, as new players join the game. But not enough to offset the already high stats of some players

so many people on top that I dont even know...
so strange...
so strange...
This is soooo cool. Now I can really know how much I SUCK, though. Looks like I'll have to practice a bit in order to keep up with some people...
Three Words: "THANK YOU DEVS! :D"
Finally duels matter! This is a great new way to foster friendly competition :).
/me brushes off his dueling vult
Oh yeah, and I'm not better than Phoenix.

Re: Klox, etc.
Keep in mind that your rating changes over time, but the points you win or lose when fighting someone depend on their rating at the time of the duel. Klox was probably fighting people with the standard rank of 1000 or so, and their rating decreased later. Also note that he never lost.
Shape, they were applied one by one, not simultaneously. And yes, points are conserved. If you're sore about your rank, challenge the people ahead of you!
Also, even if you're fighting someone 100 points below you, you still gain 40 or so points. There needs to be a difference of around 1000 points for the returns to really diminish. I might experiment with the constants in the equation and recompute the ranks, but that's how it works now.

Who made that damn silly rule about me not typing /duel ever, even if it was me? well, shoot that guy in the head will you?... lol
Whoa, I just noticed that none of the links work in IE. God, you suck, IE.
Also, I feel bad for PickAxePete.
Ahh, here's another problem. It prunes out and does not display characters who have been deleted, but those characters do themselves have ranks and count towards your rating. I'll make it show those.
