just don't look at the targets standing, what is relevant is the _relative_ standing. if you are -200 serco and they are -250 serco, that doesn't really make for much of a deal. if one is +500 Itani and you are +700 Serco, that's a 1300 difference, that is relevant.

also, if they are -600 Valent and you are +850 Valent, so what? there should be a way for the radar to be set to "any relative difference" and "only opposing faction"-difference. one thing I hate about CtC now is being shot by greens. especially greens that can read our nation chat.

I'm quite certain that RelayeR was *kidding*.

It's clear that the current system isn't working. My character has maximum standing with all factions, and yet Xang defenders still look red on my radar, as do a few other factions. Clearly something isn't right.

That said, let's all just concentrate on suggesting how it COULD/should work, much as terjekv has.

yes, it is difficult to use it, and a green shooting at you ,especially if your new to it confuses you.
I know this will not be popular with some players and I am not trying to make it hard on the guys that write this game, they are doing very good work so im not being critical, its just an idea.
You could assign one color to each faction and bots. It never changes. You use your radar to toggle each dot and get a reading on who they are and if hostile also how far away. For example, you jump into a sector with a big fight going on, you see where most of your same color dots are , you would head in that direction for safety in numbers until you can get oriented.
Also when you target/toggle a dot it could show you info like bountied player or enemy status.
It is confusing the way it is now , this way would simplify it.
I dont know anything about programing and how difficult it would be to change it as it is now and if this is to much I understand. Just wanted to help.
Thanks

"Greens that can read our nation chat?" Like who?

Ignore that, Solra

They hear about something that heard someone from a friend that is nearly sure he heared about rumors that someone heared ... (andsoon)

Next we will read the "/explode all Itani" command should be removed because some exploiter used it to kill all Itani attacking a Serco Convoy with it. After they got tons of cash with the "/roll the dice" command of course...

To make it clear: An admired Itani cannot read Serco nation chat and vice versa!
He surely could log in with another char of the enemy nation and read it then, but that is another topic...

But the thing with green player attacking is really bad. I tend to say that every player of a foreign faction/nation should be red at the radar. No matter the standing.

I was killed by a green dot during CtC a while ago, now, I didn't think Itanis could kill Itanis, but if you're an Itani with -enough Itani and + enough Serco, it seems to be doable, yet you're still Itani, and it sure did seem like the person could read #11.

he might of course just be psycic, or make a great guess at our plans, but still. :-)

ok let me explain it:

If you are an Itani and fighting against an admired Serco, that Serco will be GREEN on your Radar.
He WILL be able to attack you, although he is marked green.
But he will NOT be able to see yours nation chat in 11.

If you are Itani and fighting against a hated Itani, that Itani will be RED on your Radar.
He WILL be able to attack you, although he is Itani too.
AND he will be ABLE to read your nations chat in 11

Thats it. And yes, I am sure. I tried all of this. You see there is no way to have a green radar-dot that is both: able do kill you AND able to see your chat in 11.

P.S.
This post is not written with the thinking of being sarcasm/unfriendly. I used short sentences because of my bad english and in the hope to make it easy to understand.

[comment: your english is very good indeed! (RelayeR)]

okay, the guy was psycic. or had a spy on the inside. if people say it's so, my bad, I just know how it looked from my end. :-)

There IS a bug then.

Just tonight, I (Mogul Velaio) went in a friendly match against Amarus (serco). It's clear that his Rag was in total disadvantage to my Valk, but I also suck at PvP so it seemed like something fun to do.

I actually won, but he did take me down considerably. I then went full stop and we chated a bit (he even refused ship reembursment--it was really friendly and we laughed a bit).

His serco ship was shown as a red dot on my screen, so I didn't even think twice and we danced around a bit until it was all over.

It seems like I didn't see the warning about faction hit when we entered this duel commedy. I should have had time to see and read that message

-while dodging his missiles
-while trying to keep my nose on his ship
-while shooting at him (from the perspective of one who still suck at pvp)
-while other chanels (11, 201 and 100) were plastering me.

The net result is that my Itani standing went from +929 down to 29. Yep: 900 points standing hit.

That's ludicrously enormous.

And why didn't he show GREEN in my radar, if he has any standing that would hinder mine?

This does get me a bit. It takes forever to regain such an amount of standing.

Thats fun!

Because when you are in a /duel. you don't take faction hits!

I know this, I've killed +1000 Serco players in /duel, inside Guarded Stations in Serco space.

True, you -dont- take faction hits.

However, if you ever damage yourself during the duel, you get bomped out and the duel is cancelled. If you then kill him, you're -not- inside a duel and you -will- therefore take a faction hit.

And. because anyone who's in a duel is -red- to -everyone- (and damage-able by anyone)
Jan 20, 2005 mgl_mouser link
Let me clarify.

We didn't "/duel". We were dueling.

I knew Amarus attacked the previous Itani convoy (another player relayed the info). I was on my way to CtC when I crossed Amarus' path. So I engaged him.

The "friendly dueling" comes from the fact that I knew I had no chance against amarus (he's way better than I am), and the "fun" part came in when I realized he was in a Rag.

We then exchanged courtesies.

So, we weren't in a "/duel". Yet, he was still red on my radar.

Hrm. Just thought of something. Does *my* serco rating affects how my radar sees other serco? If a Serco is "itani admire" but I'm "Serco hate", would that (should that) be a reason for the red dot on my radar?

Yes.

Thank you FM...
1) I was kidding.
2) I realize something needs to be done about radar color.
3) I *LOVE* Massai's idea (really).
4) Even better would be an FAA AT-Controler's readout of every ship in the sector - with a) nation code, b) standing with your nation/faction of location, c) ship type, d) distance & e) pilot name.

No kidding!
Jan 21, 2005 Beolach link
#4 there would be great, RelayeR, but I think would be unreadable with the radar as it is now. It'd need a full screen radar display to really work. Maybe put all that info on the sector-listing 'u' screen?

[edit]
Also, the actual number for "standing with your nation/faction of location" might be a bit too much info, maybe it should only be the worded standing, KOS/Hated/Disliked/Neutral, etc.
