The Gauntlet
Here's an interestin challenge:
Take one strong player (lots of PvP experience)
Take X new PvP'ers
strong player puts down 10k for each opponent
new players put up 10k a piece.
Here's the catch (kinda neat from a game theory perspective):
The Strong player collects the 10k from whomever he/she kills, but if he dies in the conflict, his share X*10k is divided amongst the remaining players.
This is a chance for new players to get PvP experience in which they are not required to go 1v1.
And a chance for strong players to show just how long they can run.................

is it a series of 1-on-1 fights, or does everyone else just pigpile on the strong guy?
Good idea Shape. Might need to find an honourable referee who can count, multiply and divide. :D
I wonder how people would actually behave in this situation. Would they pile in and fight, or would it be like a group project in high school where everyone tries to push the work off onto the other students?
Now here's an idea i like. Obviously there would need to be a few ground rules, but those could vary from combat to combat.
I for one would never want to see swarms, because that doesnt give the new players any actual experience or skill, other than that tho, Very cool idea.

I hearby nominate myself for the role of referee, since I have multiple backup methods of counting, multiplying, and dividing. Of course, this does depend on whether or not I'm online, since it's hard to get the numbers right when you're not even in existance at the time. My Calc program/TI-83/pencil & paper/brain can handle whatever calculations might be required.
(Plus, I can provide words of encouragement, cheers, and other forms of idle chit-chat and commentary while the fight is underway.)

I could ref too if ya need it. I'm an ok PvPer (better then most nOOb lol) so I could also some give advice.
Make an arena station, a large transparent sphere with a dock and basic trade items. This kind of public dueling could be advertised on a channel also, possibly implementing a spectator mode while in stations that lets you watch the duels that go on there. (limit its movement to within the sphere the arena station envelops
That would be vary cool. No one could run and it would be hard to back roll. Nice idea.
backrolling is always possible...
you just need to know what you are doing.
you just need to know what you are doing.
doesnt make backrolling any less lame or wasteful
sigh,
that is your interpretation of a valid tactic. Do you really think that in a real fight your going to make it so that the other person has an advantage over you...
Hell no you make sure that you have the advantage, and you do that by keeping people at your preferred distance. For some people that is 50 m for others that is 300m. And backpedalling makes this possible(albeit slow), just as boosting makes you able to advance very quickly( but in a kind of a linear path).
However abusing the limits of the game to take over the 'skill' part to actually hit people is lame. Aka go into a 50m distance and use autoaim to take away the need of aiming to hit your oponent, use the proximity trigger to make sure that every shot is in fact a hit at the same time by damaging yourselve (at however a lesser degree since you know where the explosion is going to take place and have therefore got a way to avoid the brunt of the splashdamage)

Will everyone just drop the backrolling thing? Christ, did I invent that term with my post about newbs not learning to fight from players? If so, I apologize, and if not, I apologize for making that post. This has gotten way out of hand.
If there is no skill in getting to within 50m and pumping away, why do some people consistently beat others at it?
Backrolling is NOT maintaining a constant distance. It's backing away continuously on the assumption that the other player will act like a bot and come forward mindlessly. A backroller is the person who attacks you then drifts away until they are far out of range.
Shape comes up with a cool idea and you all decide to bicker over who is more lame? Gah. FM, I humbly request that you delete the previous two posts as well as this one (as with them gone it will be irrelevant). I think I'll go make a new thread about this misuse of backrolling.

Don't flatter yourselve star. The term backrolling has existed since pre 3.0. But was considered at that time to be a good tactic.
You just launched the bastardized version (namely backing off constantly...)
Why do you see people defy the laws of gambling constantly..., but based on logic, it is no skill since on both occasions you abuse something to give you an advantage.

All I meant by there being no (little?) back rolling was that most of the fighting would be fast and in your face.

I loved fights that took some time...
It used to take like 5 mins to fight someone in the old times... with blue ions and a sunflare. Now those where the good old days...

Triflare duels were the days... I guess to each his own.
great idea, and a public arena / sphere, yes please! dang. this sounds like a great idea. maybe the arena itself should offer some money and stuff to the winner?
