What finally convinced me to buy some time on VO
Thought the devs might like to know this. Since yodaofborg mentioned that linux was the pull in yoda's case, I thought I'd share mine. I played the trial on my PC some, and then on my Mac some, and was sorta digging it on the Mac because I'm just digging OSX* ... but when I found out that my Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold USB Gold joystick** not only worked in VO, but that VO recognizes every control on the stick, I thought, "Hey, cool! This is way more fun than using the keyboard!" The fact that my joystick worked in this game, on an old G4, is what finally convinced me.
* The graphics look better on my PC, but it's newer and has a nicer graphics card, more RAM, more RAM on the card, etc.
**Saitek doesn't offer any Mac support for this stick at all. That's what was so great about VO.

I figured that, after playing in the Vendetta Engine Test and then the "Beta" for the last year and a half, the least I could do would be to pony up a mere $27.00 for the pre-order boxed game as a way of thanking the Devs for providing me so many hours of wasted time.
EDIT: I did just recently reup for a years subscription. We'll see how things go from here. :-)

Same here, paedric, word for word.
Vendetta has the most compatible control system ever.
I once flew with two joysticks, a keyboard and a mouse at the same time! :0

I will pay for vendetta, even if i cant play, i just wish paybycash would get their backsides into gear and give my money to the devs! (Ok, a lil selfish, i want yoda back /me cries! =)
OH, also, on the topic of 'most compatible control system': I really admire the way VO lets me calibrate my joystick and adjust its range. Other game makers should learn from this. It's the best way I've ever seen. I really like how I can move the start and end points of the control ranges around, and make them narrow or wide. That's helping me dial in a feel that works for me with an old joystick that's either worn or dirty [in other games, it's almost unusable because the Z-twist axis is touchy].
id just like to say (mainly so they dont make it windows exclusive!) that it was the linux version that made me buy time online just like yodaofborg. there are so few linux mmorpgs and this game is in a league of its own - keep it up guys!
While it wasn't _only_ that it had a Linux version (there's plenty of Linux games that I haven't bought), I will say that if there wasn't a Linux version I would not have bought VO.
same here, the Linux native version sold me on the spot. I tried the demo for a while and boy did I get hooked. amazing work devs, thank you!
Even though I don't use Linux, I like knowing that some of the people I meet in VO are Linux users. Welcome to the fun!
"waleran" yes. As a PC owner, I love that I'm having fun with Linux and Mac users... why on earth (or space) should a gaming experience be limited to folks who own one type of computer or another?
IMO, this is a model that the larger, far more well monetarily endowed development houses should follow.

When I originally downloaded the game, I was intending just to try it out for a few minutes and not planning to buy it. Seeing a Linux binary was what first started to shift me in the other direction.
Once I actually played the game for a few hours, I decided that I couldn't be without it and canceled my own similiar project just so I could play it...

Edit: At the time, I wasn't planning on running it on a Linux machine, the fact that they would put an effort into a Linux port made the devs feel more human in some way.

Hmmm, now i thought long and very hard about this....
....I think it was the linux compatibility that first brought me to V all the many moons ago (and its definatly longer than my account info states? Im not the only person to notice this)...
...But I dont think that is what convinced me to pay for vendetta, what I actually think it is, is being in touch, on some level with the game creators.
Yeah sure, other *BIG* game companies have *forums*, have you ever seen the managing director of EA in a game you have played?
I got the chance more than once to shoot at Incarnate, OK, both times i died (well, since beta... ... I didnt know when i did it in alpha till after..lol) First time due to the fact that i didnt know corvus had become a no fire zone + arena seekers (or my swarms would have got im i swear..lol), second time he 10X swarmed me, wow, i got swarmed by a devgod =DDDD....
Thats why my above post stands true, even if i get a) Bored (i doubt) of vendetta, b) I get my hands cut off c) some other tradegy, I will still pay for vendetta...

Here, it was the Linux clients avaiability that got me to try it.
What kept me was the addictive gameplay and nice community.
What gets me paying was the contact with developers, both here and on IRC, casual chats and insight in the games development give me an understanding for it, and an appreciation for the work in a more personal way than normally. Seeing suggestions implemented is a huge thing as well.
And the possibility to challenge a dev to a duel, have them warp you over and get their ass kicked is just great ;)

I've always asked the question: If 4 guys on a shoestring budget can make a quality game like VO run on the major 3 platforms simultaneously, why can't the big corporations?
I have thought that a real physics based space RPG was a good idea. Not having the programing experience to create something like Vendetta myself i have been working on a pencil and Paper RPG that uses some of the same ideas ever since i starred playing Escape Velocity. It's been years and the all the bugs still havn't been woked out.
Also i would like to add that while i have acess to a PC i doubt that i would pay for vendetta if ti weren't available on the Mac.
and now i'm going to have to try that two joystick idea, thanks waleran

Um, it wasn't me who mentioned using 2 joysticks at once -- didn't see any mention of that -- but I was just saying how impressed I was that VO supported my favorite, highly adjustable joystick, even though the company that makes the joystick doesn't give a flip about Mac users. The calibration screens in the Mac version totally rock, too.
BTW, I've tried VO on my PC, which has a better graphics card and a faster CPU, but VO isn't nearly as nice to me on the PC. The game keeps 'jumping', as if I were experiencing lag and, to bring us back to the joystick topic, VO's cool joystick calibration screen doesn't appear in the Windows version on my PC. I just get the old, blah Windows calibration dialog.
So I stopped trying it on the PC! I'm loving it on the Mac. Now all I need is something like TeamSpeak that works on a Mac ....
