is there any point to joining a group?

other than being able to type 'g' to chat?

i have had conflicting reports of what happens to the XP during 'group' combat. and i know it cancels your combat missions when you join a group. and i know the manual says you will get 'increased experience points' for joining a group.
and another person told me that if you are in a group, only one person gets the XP for a kill.. and i know some people said group missions are broken, but i see people on 100 saying 'anyone want to group for botting'? and last time i killed a queen in a group, we got all sorts of random experience points... and i just am so confused, can someone explain the 'group' command, and if it is actually useful for anything?

I grouped for alot of stuff and never saw any advantages in it or felt i got more xp. Mostly I group in order to have radar lock in long range area beyond the 3000m, use group chat and to see who is damaged or in/out of sector when people fight.

I wish grouping would be rewarded and that the more people group the more advantages it would bring for the individual. Synergy Effect, you know what i mean.. 1+1=3...

You mean other than it is fun?

Not really at present. The devs have promised to tweak things soon(tm).

I use it when in CtC so that I can see groupmates' health. It'd be nice if we could invite the transports to groups...

Yes, there is a problem with groups and they need to be tweaked. But I'll explain how groups work.
When you form a group you abort any current mission that you have, same thing happens with joining a group. There are three group missions that I know of...

1)Begginner Group Combat Mission: This mission is only availble to those groups where the group members are a very low level. This mission is exactly the same as the solo combat mission but the only diference is your in a group, and therefore, must destroy more bots.
2)Advanced Group Combat Mission: Available to those groups that have higher level players. Again, the only difference is you are in a group and having to destroy more bots.
3)Group Border Patrol: For groups with very high levels. Exactly the same as the solo border mission but in a group.

When you are doing group combat missions, the number of bots you have to destroy is determined (I think) by however many bots the strongest player has to kill solo multiplied by the number of players. For example, if the strongest player has to destroy 6 bots alone, and there are 3 members in the group, then the group has to kill 18 bots to get the bonus (3x6). (Note: You do not have to be in the same sector to get the bonus.)
When a bot is destroyed, only the person who destroyed it gets the XP for it. But, and this doesn't apply only to groups, if more than one person damages a bot when it is destroyed the XP is divided amoung them according to how much damage each did to the bot. So, when "ananzi" was group killing the queen, everyne got whacko XP because everyone did different amounts of damage to the queen.

I (personally) only find grouping useful when "powerleveling" another player, Since you do not need to be in the same sector to get the bonus (even if you don't kill a single bot). I would group someone, and while I was botting and getting the bonus, the other person could do whatever they please. (Note: While botting, for every bonus everyone gets the same amount of XP, but the money bonus is divided.)

Does this answer your questions?

what do you mean by 'power leveling'?

if you had to kill twice as many bots to get a bonus, and you were the only one killing bots, doesnt that mean that you were getting bonuses twice as slow for yourself?
DragonEmpire: I (personally) only find grouping useful when "powerleveling" ANOTHER PLAYER
When grouped, all players get a bonus whether they have killed bots or even participate in the group botting exercise. As long as they are part of the group, they get the bonus. Essentionally, by grouping, DragonEmpire is not only getting a bonus, but that lazy, not-good-for-nothing groupmate is also. It is true that DragonEmpire would have to kill more bots to achieve the level, but the point is to bring along an AFK pilot as well so speed isn't the real issue here.

I hope they paid you well DragonEmpire. (0.o)

Yes, paedric is right on the money. The point to "powerleveling" another player is to get their levels up, not your own. (Though you do still get XP at a slower rate, therefore, slowly making you stronger.) It is true that you have to kill more bots, but again, the point of doing it is not for yourself.

The group is very useful for (at this time) CTC and/or PvP combat. Not only do you get the group chat, but your team shows up as white dots on radar, at any range, making targeting easier. You know the condition of your group mates ships at a glance. You know who is and is not in sector with you at a glance. Groups are not guild or nation specific, so people of multiple guilds and nations can join. So yes, I would say that for any type of group combat operations, grouping is the way to go.

However, I have never done any mission from the mission menu as a group. So, I cannot comment on that aspect of group play.

Cheers!

The radar at any range is also very helpful for Hive Queen hunting, where you might jump in a long way away from the Queen, and may not easily know which way to go to find it.

Combat advanced mission = group able

The power leveling is usless in VO.
it's just a litte impact.

Pilot licence isn't player's skill.
pilot licence is use only to buy ships.
and currently somone with a licence 4 could buy a vulture and could able to kick your ass licence 10.

that's why i like VO.
player's skill > Xp (licence)
yea a better ship help.

Ananzi, Yes, there is a point to joining a group, it helps people who are botting compare against each other, and gives a more online feel - ATM - if nothing else...

Group with me ananzi, I will give you something more than bots to avoid...LOL
