Ok did a search and if I understand right I should be getting station faction increases for all missions, but best I can tell I only get increases with cargo missions???????

Also the manual on my HD..none of the links in the left hand submenue work?????

check your faction standings after each mission. Mine are working fine :P

As far as I can tell faction standing (national or corporate) increases depending on the station where you got the mission. So running cargo gives you standing with the company or nation that owned the station you got the mission at. Combat standing seems to increase based on which faction's space you're in (none in grey space? I haven't actually killed anything there).
