I was loging in some cargo runs to various stations trying to see who bought what...I was in Edras by the gate to Verasi(which is listed as a guarded sector) I was attacked by player...where were the guards?

Ok moving on I had to make a run and jumped to another quadrant the dude followed me..Im thinking how did he know where I jumped!(low and behold I see right there on the screen Thranger jumped to d2

Whoa! wait a minute are you telling me that the game tells the pirates where you are? and if that is so that means it tells him you just jumped into a sector with a station, so that now he can camp outside it?

If you are within 500 (I think) meters, you can see where they jump to when they jump.

Its 1000m, and its actually too easy to get away from somebody chasing these says, pirate or not.

If you are being chased jump to an empty sector then as quickly as possible jump to another empty sector. Rinse repeat as necessary as long as you are quick and not extremely predictable I doubt a pirate would be able to follow you (he has to take the time to remember which sector you jumped to and then find it after 5 or 6 jumps even the best pirate would have to get lucky).

Any other pirate foiling tricks? (how do mines work out?)

dropping a mine when a pirate is on top of you in a tail chase will get his attention at least. Probably it wont destroy him, but it just might blast him off course and get him out of that 1k range to know where you ae going next.

since following anyone is hard (whether you are pirating or just following), would it be bad idea to have the option of being notified where your last target just jumped? (whether you are close to them or not. hmm. how about even if they are in another sector?
more fun for bounty hunting and finding other players in your system.

As a rule, it would be an incredibly bad idea; it'd make it much harder to escape being killed. This is especially important for relatively low-level and new players, who don't have a prayer in PvP... And who have no way to turn OFF PvP like they do in many games. A lot of the existing content requires going to grey space (black market tech, prospecting, corporate faction standing...) and having no way to escape would make it beyond frustrating for a number of us.
