The capital ships are not currently part of the game, and multiplayer ship support has not yet been released. The answer is: "one"

In alpha they held a single pilot.

There's quite a bit of discussion (among the devs) that needs to go into how many users might populate a particular ship before a specific answer can be given. Considerations including technical issues, balance, gameplay, and whether other ships would have more than one user on board have to be weighed. It's too early.

So when will be Capital Ship be online? a couple weeks?

The devs mentioned approximatly 6 months after the release as the date when capital ships might be ready.

yeah David capital ships are gunna take more then 2 weeks to develop. With all the desitions that need to be made upon it, I'd say 6 monthes is actually a really good deal. Considering that they're pretty much starting from scratch. Give it time, as much time as it takes, and im sure that your head will explode when they come.

And in alpha we only had the Frigate, aka [NPC] Gentu, but it wasn't available to fly in.

In fact, it just kinda sat there and took immense pounding as you move into a blind spot from stationary turrets placed in space. And then it blew up and bits hit you and you died.

aww. but attacking it from creative places (not the typical blindspot) was fun. and all the turret fire showering you was pretty.

/me wants to see the capital ship blow up again. something that huge... really fantastic :)

I'd say it will have a turret for every available ship that can dock.... sound good?
