As in you could protest their usage of your designs because you, by default, hold copyright to them. Unless you physically signed a waiver...

It's normal for people to donate 3D models for free and sign waivers for their use? It's not a bad idea or anything, but it doesn't strike me as typical.

Normaly modeler don't donate their models (Since they are employed and get salary), but they do sign a waivers.
