chatcolors.sd <-- what does the sd mean? All the others make sense. Not able to test atm.
Just out of curiousity, is this still working for people? I tried making changes and didn't see anything different.
I tried the chatcolors entries in several different sections of the config, but none of them seemed to work.
If I put these at the top of the file, will it work?
chatcolors.msgoutgoing=808080
chatcolors.msgincoming=ff80ff

Rather than putting them at the top of the file, you'd want to put them either in the section for the character you want to use those chat colors, or in a colors section. I'd try a colors section first, as that seems to be the most recent. So you'd put this into the config.ini file, either at the top or the bottom, it shouldn't matter (I think):
[colors]
chatcolors.msgoutgoing=808080
chatcolors.msgincoming=ff80ff
If that doesn't work, then look for a section starting with your character name in square brackets, and put the chatcolors lines just after that: for example I would look for a line with just [Beolach] on it, and put the chatcolors lines just after that line, like so:
[Beolach]
chatcolors.msgoutgoing=808080
chatcolors.msgincoming=ff80ff

chatcolors.msgincoming=ff80ff

This should be implemented with the new UI, but it didn't work for me.
So I don't know if that means this thread is so old that that time has passed.
Or that I'm doing it wrong.
Or that the old AND new UI don't support this.
Either or let's get some user definable colors!

Old UI most certainly allows this... I've changed my incoming and outgoing private message colors to something more unique than red and green.
Make sure that you are putting it under the [colors] headerI have had no success with putting it under a character's header.
johnhawl: "sd" stands for Sector Daemon; it's the color that shows up for system messages specifically pertaining to your sector.

There are a bunch more different chat types for the new client. You'll be able to change colors like crazy.
Totally and completely kickass.
I agree, that sounds awesome. I assume there will be an interface to change them in game right?
um, sure.

Can we get a list of chat types available now?

/me wants to be able to color the name of the person sending the chat separately than the chat message itself. So the name could be colored based on guild or nation, while the message could be colored based on what chat it's coming through (active/inactive channel, group/guild, etc.).
Beolach, the current beta will not have that level of coloring, but it will eventually be possible.
relayer, it's the same as the production client, right now. Actually, it's a little less, but here they are:
[colors]
chatcolors.buddynote = 80ff80
chatcolors.msgoutgoing = 80ff80
chatcolors.msgincoming = ff0000
chatcolors.barlist = ffffff
chatcolors.barenter = ffffff
chatcolors.barleave = ffffff
chatcolors.sector = 00ff00
chatcolors.mission = 00ff00
chatcolors.guild = ffb935
chatcolors.guide = ffffff
chatcolors.group = ffff00
chatcolors.system = ff00ff
chatcolors.sd = 00ffff
chatcolors.activechannel = 28b4f0
chatcolors.inactivechannel = 0050f0
chatcolors.nation = 40ffff
You put this section into the config.ini and it should work.
I haven't tested it, hmm, and I don't even remember if it's in beta5 or will be in the next one.
All this will change and there will be an interface to be able to set the colors.

Working for me!
Oooh, I'll have to try this. Colors are neato!
Not working for me either. Config.ini stays the same, ie it doesn't overwrite what I put in, but the chat colors stay the same ol' default ones. Might the chat colors be somewhere else now?
In conclsuion, TextEdit and Config.ini don't mix. TextEdit doesn't make line breaks for some reason o_O
Are you copying the chat colours from Firefox or Camino? I remember having similar problems when I used those browsers to copy stuff from the VO Wiki.
