Can we move from Slashnet?
I for one am getting pretty sick of the constant network problems, and I'd really like us to move. I know, I know..."You can move to wherever you want" but nobody will follow unless the devs go too. Vendettaweb? Another large IRC network? Somewhere other than SlashNet, please..
We just lost the vendetta feed in #vendetta-ingame~
Not sure if its a netsplit or some other technical problem.

Ja, Slashnet is kinda irritating... Actually, how much bandwidth does a IRC server take? I'm sure it could be stuck in a old (e.g., 486) boxen on the same pipe as the webserver fairly easily... :P
irc.blitzed.org
http://www.blitzed.org
medium sized network, many North american and european servers, geo-dns pool so you are connected to server close to your region responsible for such IRC wonders as BOPM and CGI-IRC, the staff is mostly developers, and I live there and wouldn't have to multi server anymore. ;)
they also have a nifty feature with services and the web so you can create pages that are authenticated via their registered IRC nicks, I have made such a page for my irc channel http://niagara.spenced.com

IRC servers can get pretty grinding if used lots... errrm, the v one (slashnet) is used lots... but i agree with *B*, theres got to be some other option?...

Yeah, what he said below(Slahnet ;p), its late here, and i've had a hard day, so shoot me...

I like SlashNET....
I'm not sure if moving to another IRC network is really going to solve anything. The problem isn't with slashnet itself, but with the internet.. it's inherently unreliable. Every multi-server IRC network I've ever been on has had netsplits, even the tiny private ones. No network is ever perfect, or without the occasional failure.
We don't terribly want to host the server/network ourselves, because IRC servers tend to be a great source of idiots getting angry at each other and then starting denial of service attacks to the server. It's a pain. I saw this sort of thing a lot when I worked for an ISP.
If people really want to move, we can, but I don't think it'll solve anything, and I don't really want to leave behind anyone who shows up on slashnet and wonders what happened to everyone. If you really want to minimize splits, have everyone connect to area51.slashnet.org. Then you just have problems when that goes down ;).

Eh, once a week netsplits, eh i've seen worse servers...like Enterthegame hahaha now that's a living joke.
I always found IRC very irritating, anyway. How about running a Java applet that allows to participate in the in-game chat without running the vendetta client? People could run it directly from the vendetta webpage.
Nice idea, but...no. Pretty sure it's already been mentioned also. Any thoughts people? Vendettaweb's seeming like a good option to me.
VendettaWEB's only one server, though. That would be somewhat inconvenient to people all the way around the world.
Couldn't we get some volunteers with nice pipes and go multi-server?
Yeah, but people with nice pipes would probably have the stability issues we have now. I dunno, VW is in the UK, and I seem to get good ping times to it, so most europeans should too...
After talking with Asphy a bit, and looking at some of the services my host offers, I'm going to try to see if we can get a backup server for Vendettaweb. If that ends up working well, I'll see about us moving there in the future.
I'm going to go out and buy some UPS equipment and a static IP this weekend. Anyone else have a good sized pipe (_stable_, and at least 1mb up) Post here, or shoot me or asphy an email, mine's alienb@localnetsys.com

Yeah, that sounds cool with me, i've no problem linking vw up, although currently the vw server is kind of unreliable.
At least until late december when the full blown reliable server kicks in, if people dont mind splits until then, thats fine.
OBV we can carry op/hop privs over, i think most are intact already anyway.
FYI: Vw is hosted in the docklands, about 2hops from linx so connectivity with europe and the us *should* be top notch.

Great. Perhaps we could run a test phase up until the 1st of January, and see about moving to VW around then.
yeah, no problem. Subject to better connectivity, we're off =)
so in conclusion 2 or 3 people are interested in moving networks which means 2 or 3 people will actually move.
so, I or anyone else who uses the slashnet channel no longer need to follow this thread heh
