Frustrated

To improve my Heavy Weapons License I tried to fulfill the Advanced Combat mission (killing either ApuTech-5 Guardians, or Artemis Collectors).

The first problem I have is to get close to that npcs - usually DenTek Collectors making a beeline for me, eating away my armor, so after killing some of them it's back to the station.

And, even if I avoid them and finally succeed to single out the proper npc, I don't survive the fight.

It wasn't any problem till Combat Licence 3, when I was able to choose the beginner's version of the mission (after the initial Orun Collectors to kill DenTeks).

After upgrading to 4, I can't choose that mission anymore, and it looks like I'm to weak for the higher one.... if I had known that I'd never would have upgraded my license - at least not before I would have collected enough points for the other license types (especially Heavy Weapons).

So, does anybody have an advice how to proceed now? (Solo only, I'm not the groupie type)

no your ship is not very weak. i would suggest trying out different fighting techs on the weaker bots so that your skill as a pilot impoves, this game had a large factor for the players skill as a pilot, and not just your licence lvl. I can take out apus in a cent with a plasma, true i have to rush back to the station after 2 because i am dont to... 20% i believe.

some general advice on how to fight the higher lvl bots
1. Old techs, the ones that you used against the dentek will not work. just plain circling wont work because they AI actually has some I in it, and will recalibrate its shots to be more accurate
2. Keep moving, more importantly move in different directions and keep switching. I would suggest pressing q and a at the same time or d and e. this is enought disorent any bot but will be hard to hit the bot, the plus is the bot wont be able to hit you.
3. measure how much each bot you kill takes out of your hull strength, and then estimate if you will survive the next bot, for me apus take about 30 %, that is why when i hit 20% i go back to the station.
4. as it says in "The art of War" if nothing works and you are about to die, run. run like all hell. the turbo is very helpful and learn to use it well.
5. and above all else, just play more and gain more skill as a pilot, i recomment dueling someone else because your skills will improve much more if you fight a human with unpreditable attack patterns and more liner ai. pratice pratice pratice.

also ask a vet ingame about what their tactics are when it comes to fighting.

happy hunting

The DenTek collectors are easily fooled by the following:

1) Approach from behind or broadside
2) Aim just ahead of moving targets so that recticle turns yellow
3) Get as many "free" shots in before the bot turns on you - usually 2-3 hits.
4) As the bot turns, immediately hold down the d and e keys (strafe and rotate) and brake momentarily to gain a little distance if you were still moving forward. Do not hold the brake or brake as the bot fires or you will be shot up.
5) Continue to hold down the d and e keys, while keeping the cursor yellow by tracking your target. You will be able to kill the DenTek without being hit at all.
6) As the bot is about to explode, hit the brake momentarily to get out of the blast radius.
7)Profit.

I'm having a similar problem and I'm no newbie. It isn't the DenTeks, Kennik, Oruns, or even Artemus collectors that are the problem. The ApuTech-5 Guardians are a bit of a challenge but not the issue. The problem is the ApuTech-17 Guardians. The few that exist are always in a heavily populated sector. All the bots seem to swarm. The ApuTech-17 Guardians are either flying wing for another bot in groups of 4 (and always fight as a group), or have a flight of at least 2 Artemis Collectors(?) flying cover. Again, it does not seem possible to separate the target from the wing. It is also not possible to take on any one bot with out all other bots in the area seeming to join in on the fight.

There do not seem to be any level 1 large port weapons (yes, I have looked in Serco, Itani, and NT), effectively rendering the Warthog useless. While the Vulture is a good ship, it just doesn't have the staying power against a swarm of bots. It's only the fact that I'm not a newbie that has allowed me to escape without dying multiple times during a very FRUSTRATING 3 hours trying to kill a lousy 4 bots for the first of the advanced combat missions. The ApuTech-17 Guardian was always the problem child in the equation.

I'm sorry, but (in my opinion) going from DenTek Collectors to ApuTech-17 Guardians is a bit too big of a jump from the Beginner Combat Missions the the first stage of the Advanced Combat Missions.

*wacks his head* didn't read that he was going after the apu 17, thought he meant the apu 5ves, yea i agree that the jump from dentek to apu 17 is too high of a jump for anyone especially noobs

my advice is to get into a group mission, the bot list for a group mission with no players over level 4 combat usually contains apu,5's, kannik collecters and artemes collectors., the xp is decent and if you get 4 or so players you can spread out and everyone kills a specific type of bot, making the missions go fairly fast.

Your advice is sound Spellcast, as was mr_spuck who gave similar advice to me in the BUGs forum. The bot level of the Group Mission done solo is what the lower level Advanced Combat Training missions should have been. That ApuTek-17 Guardian is just too hard too get at once you find it for lower level players of average skill flying lower level ships with lower level equipment.

I have problems with the guardians myself and I am flying in a ragnarock ship with 3 small and 2 large weapons . Their rate of fire + their accuracy seems to be incredibly perfect . It also seems that they have no battery problems as they can warp as they want and fire continuasly . I have tried to strafe and roll up behind them , but in the end they end up taking me out . I do feel the support that always manages to fly in right as I have the upper hand is what makes them so tough .

The combat in this game is a huge leap above what we had in E&B and I welcome the challenge , but I also feel its a bit daunting for those thats just coming into the game . The learning curve isn't as bad as EVE's but yet its much more frustrating than E&B's .
BTW , on my rag I am using heat seeking missi;es in my 2 heavy slots and the connect rate atm is very low .

Guardians are easy to hit. Get in a ship with Vulture or higher maneuverability (Vulture, Centurion of Valkyrie). Turn off autoaim. Go into physics mode. Go into a barrell roll and concentrate fire on the center of the bot. Da.

The thing about guardians is that, like most good players, they know how to beat the autoaim. But you can still kill them quite easily without autoaim on.

hc, part of your problem is your choice of ship

the rangarok is an excellent support ship, but not much of a frontline combat vessel. It doesent start to shine until you get into some pvp scenarios where there are multiple pilots on each side. as a ship for killing bots, it kinda sucks

yes if you are lvled up enought to get a rag, just get a vult and get dual tach or plasma HX and you should find it easier to fight the bots, the vult is a lot faster and more agile than the rag. Hense the names rag=heavy bomber, vult=solo fighter.
