/me empties his six-month-old drool bucket and continues looking at the photos.
THE MAUD!
I miss my maud. . .
/me considers asking Eldrad to let him borrow his for a spin.

Don't tell me that's what people who turn all the settings up see... If they do, I need to buy a new graphics card... *drools*

You know how old those pictures are? Sheesh...
They were first shown to us shortly before 3.2 came out. I think that was around March of '02.

Actually, those pictures are a little bit better than what people see with all the settings turned up... You can't possibly tell me this is the first picture you ever saw with maxxed out details though.

They're a bit better. The texture resolution is higher in those images than we use in-game (we use smaller textures to keep the download a bit smaller). But the detail in terms of shaders and stuff.. the lighting playing across detailed bumpy surfaces and such, that's all the same in-game with a Pixel Shader capable videocard and the Win32/DirectX client. Some of the shaders have been back-ported to openGL on the Mac, but only for certain videocards (ATI). We will backport shaders to OpenGL for Mac/Linux eventually, but it isn't a priority right now, and it's kind of an involved mess to do (due to vendor-specific extensions and inconsistencies).
