Work through tutorials to get the hang of things but you really need a 'project' to drive you forward so you are forced to tackle problems which you might otherwise shy away from. I've written a couple of Lua plugins for VO primarily by just copying some of the others on http://www.voupr.com/list.php

The plugins are generally pretty simple though so won't really teach you that much about programming and also Lua is pretty niche so I would concentrate on C++ or Javascript first then just dip in when you actually need a plugin.

So come up with an idea for a modest size project and start writing it in C++ or Javascript. This way you'll learn frameworks and you'll actually have something tangible to put on your CV when you come to apply for a job.

Software engineering is a fantastic career - relatively stress free, well paid and mostly interesting.

Good luck !

i have a teacher whom i wanted to join the dev team for VO, he is a savant when it comes to coding,he is interested and i want to get him playing soon,so he is teaching me how to code both C++ AND javascript. he is certified in alot more than those, though,so im trying to soakup all the knowledge i can.
