GearVR Player here
This is by far the most awesome GearVR game there is, it really fun right up to the point where you get into pvp combat and realize just how important strafe / maneuver really is. I attempted to correct by customizing the controls but there were some unfortunate limitations, it was easy to set up strafe up down left and right on the left thumb stick, but now I have lost accelerate and decelerate. the two functions that seem the least costly to give up are left and right roll which are controlled by the lower two trigger buttons R2 and L2. However I find that the reverse function does not work even thought its listed there (sorta its shown as accelerate or decelerate) Accelerate works on R2 or L2 but the combo option of accelerate and decelerate does not work. I would be great of there were just simple decelerate option for both R2 and L2 trigger buttons. I switched to PC and find the game is much more fun and immersive in GearVR but pvp against a skilled player is bad news for the GearVR folks. That one change could give us a big leg up against out PC brothers.
So, the default gamepad controller configuration gives you full horizontal and vertical strafe capabilities. If you're using something like a SteelSeries XL or Moga Pro, it shouldn't be a problem, although you need to obviously look up the current bindings (X+Y chorded to see the current layout, I think?) and learn to use them..
Similarly, "reverse" works fine, but there are two different flight models that have different types of Reverse. Using it on Flight-Assist mode will cause the ship to decrease throttle, and then once at zero throttle, to begin actually reverse-thrusting. It does work, but it's more delayed.
Physics Mode, on the other hand, has instantaneous reverse-thrust. But, it has all the other challenges of Physics Mode, like not really seeing where you're going.
Both flight models can be toggled from the default gamepad layout.
So, anyway, while I certainly agree there are improvements we can make here, I'm not sure the specific complaints you've outlined are..commonly among them?
What kind of gamepad do you have? Maybe your configuration or detection was messed up for some reason. We test with SteelSeries, Moga, Razer and Nyko, but there's a lot of random controller-makers out there..

Hello Incarnate
Thanks for the crazy fast reply. I bought the Steel Series specifically for this game, and later bought two BebonCool controllers as well. You are right all of the strafe ability is present with the default config. Left and Right Straffe are on the Thumb joystick and the up and down strafe are on the dpad up and dpad down and targeting is on dpad left and right.
In the heat of a battle even against a bot switching from the thumb joystick to the dpad results in delays or you hit the wrong portion of the dpad and move to the next target. Now I can certainly kill bots and just ignore up and down strafe since the bots are not to smart. But when fighting players, its a different game completely and fractions of a second make the difference between getting hit or not.
so
I decided to try the game on the pc, first thing I did was change the default mapping of W and S
W is strafe up and S is strafe down, R is accelerate and F is decelerate. I fight with any player now and hold my own. However I want to go back to GearVR and that is what prompted me to try and change some of the defaults so that I could play in GearVR ( WAY MORE FUN) but still compete against all the vets pirates etc who constantly want to kill you.
I Noticed
That I L1 and L2 have the option to accelerate and decelerate but that means giving up a weapon. I am not asking you to change the defaults. But I am asking if you would be willing to just add decelerate as an option for us to choose for the R1 and R2 buttons.
There is a uniqueness to this game that I cant find anywhere else and big part of that is the PVP, nothing even comes close to this in the GearVR world. I just want to be able to respond in battle in a way that's not clumsy with the hands. Remember we are blind while wearing the headset :)

So, in talking to Ray a bit about this, apparently his implementation has different commands available for analog versus digital inputs. This makes a certain amount of sense, analog inputs (like a "throttle") actually work differently from inherently-digital inputs (like a fire-button, which is only off or on, and doesn't have a whole "scale" of possible input ranges).
I'm not 100% sure what you're seeing.. because your "R1/R2" versus "L1/L2" description doesn't quite make sense. However, if you meant "R1/L1" versus "R2/L2", then that would make sense, because the L1/R1 are digital buttons and the L2/R2 are actually analog "triggers" that have a whole input range. The difference between the button types is what separates what can currently be bound to them (at least, in the simplified Game Controller interface.. there are actually more "manual" ways of doing this).
We are going to add an "Accelerate/Decelerate" option for digital buttons, in the Game Controller config screen, in the release tonight as well. Hopefully that will also improve your situation.
In general, though, there isn't anything that can be configured on the PC, in terms of a game controller bindings, that can't also work on GearVR. It's just that the PC doesn't have the updated Game Controller config screen yet.

My apologies I miss-spoke abit there. The controllers do have L1/L2 and R1/R2 all of those buttons / triggers have the accelerate option but the bottom two buttons/triggers only have accelerate but do not have decelerate. The do have a combo option to accelerate or decelerate but it only accelerates. So if the bottom buttons have the accelerate options why not the decelerate options.
I am going to go back in and have another look to refresh my memory on all of this. And just to be clear I did not want you to do anything for the PC, the pc has plenty of options and is easy enough to change to our needs. Pllaying on the phone seems to have lots of options as well with Droid bottons etc its just the gearVR that I am interested in seeing a additional option.
Thanks again I really appreciate all the dialog.

Does the Steelseries not have a L3/R3 "click" function on the thumbsticks? I normally set L3 to decelerate and R3 to accelerate.
I was incorrect, the options on the lower L2/R2 are "Accelrate" which works and "Accelerate Forward or Reverse" which only accelerates. ALSO I totally forgot to mention the dpad does not have the decelerate option either which could be an equally viable option but it does have accelerate. The left thumbstick is turbo which by the way gets uncomfortable after multiple escort missions.. the right thumb stick is brakes on both Steel series and the Beboncool and it does have the option to decelerate but we kinda need brakes and if you move your thumb much in any direction while braking you lose your orientation. This too can be very bad in combat as you always face your opponent or you wont see that flare you need to dodge.
One other note, I don't think you guys as short order cooks here to meet my personal wants and needs I am interested in improving the game play for GearVR because the VR experience is all kinds of awesome. I like it so much that I am even building out a VR PC for HTC Vice so that I can play Vendetta on the PC in VR but I want my kids and friends to play to and I like to have the ability to play mobile so I can be anywhere and still play.
Thanks again
Thanks again
I know where Krazzzy is coming from. I have had the same trouble finding the "right" setup for full manoeuvrability in VR. Then again, it took me ages to find the right setup for PC, too.
He is correct that L2+R2 cannot be used for accel/decel, even on PC. It used to work, a long long time ago, but not since all the controller tweaks for Android. You used to have the option to bind the Z axis to Accel/Decel, but that option is missing now and does not work in scenarios where the triggers are separate Axis. (like Xbone controllers)
See: https://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/1/33028 - it has been posted about, and was one of my hopes in my "classic controller" suggestion threads.

Some controllers merge the two triggers into one axis. The Logitech F710 does that.
The XBox 360 has separate axes.
That is out of our control, it's just how DirectInput enumerates them.

Invert accel/decel to make it a rev command.
There's a bug where XBox One controllers don't properly invert their trigger controls, but that's only on Windows. We're adding a Decelerate command so you won't need to invert it, but inverting accel/decel like anthonsh12 suggests should work as well.
So to circle back to the beginning we established that all four buttons or triggers L1/L2 and R1/R2 can be configured for "Accelerate". With that being said it seems plausible that decelerate should be an option for all 4 buttons as well; but as it stands its only available for R1/L1 which means giving up a weapons group to get reverse on one of those buttons.
Now I want to point out that the key focus of this thread to was add some options to the controller that allow for a very agile configuration for combat or defense.
Ideally This means your fingers should be resting on all the appropriate buttons, strafe, accelerate, decelerate, and the right thumb-stick which controls where your ships points.
I am writing all of this because I am not sure I have convinced you guys this this worth your time and I do realize you have to weigh each task and its cost in time to implement vs the existing mountain of work setting on your desk.
Cheers

Crackers!!
I just saw the other thread, I am excited to hear the change is coming.!!!!!
However some friends had suggested that I try inverting it; but it was not an option for the trigger buttons.
Thanks again

Guys I tested the new options and they work great!!!! Thank you very very very much!
