The way I see it is: While I may not be able to afford VR gear atm, VR is the future of gaming.
VO has VR.
VO will still be around in the future to enjoy :-)

Newsflash: VO is what it is. If you aren't happy with how development is progressing, tough shit. Don't be continously fooled by the free discussion that occurs here that it actually has any significant influence whatsoever on what GS decides.
All these non-gameplay/content related updates have been done out of a need to survive. The gameplay has suffered as a result, yes. There is no way to deny it. But the alternative would appear to be the game would cease to exist.
Thus you have three options: 1) accept and embrace VO as it is; 2) leave the game out of disinterest / frustration, or 3) continue to bang your head on the wall in futility wishing the game would get better.
Peace out!

VR is certainly the future and mobile VR is going to be the first and most pervasive implementation of it. If you dont have a Gear VR you really dont understand how game-changing (pardon the pun) the hardware is. All for an extremely reasonable entry price of $99. I feel spoiled with the quality of device and content for the price.
VO will be the only real, tested, and successful mobile VR MMO out there. Likely for quite a while. Being available on the Oculus store, presumably for free, is going to be a big deal. And then the Steam release will be even bigger. VO will benefit in the long run by developing VR now. More players, more exposure, more subs, and more money coming in to fuel further development of requested features.

"it's hard to get excited about VR specific development that I will probably never see as a Linux user."
That seems overly pessimistic. The Vive may have dropped the ball on supporting us from launch (presumably so they could have a release date closer to the Rift, which achieved its earlier date by also dropping us), but Valve is pretty serious about Linux gaming. I'm confident they'll come through eventually.

This is argumentum ad consequentiam. If you're unhappy that VO is focusing on VR development, say so, but why not leave out the bold predictions?
Nothing I've said is bold. This is all established history repeating itself again. VO was first to mobile before there were advanced mobile games. What's our mobile presence now in relation to other games? We were a first mover on the rift. How's our presence there in comparison to other games? Show me where I'm wrong. Let's talk again in 6 months. I subscribe because I believe in this game, but that doesn't mean I blindly follow whatever direction we're marching with enthusiasm.

I'm all for looking at history; Incarnate stated mobile is currently the reason Guild is still in business. VO's presence is that it is one of the only true cross-platform MMORPGs, let alone twitch-combat. I'm not expecting VR to be anything different, market-wise; I am attacking other companies overshadowing Guild 6 months from now as a reason not to invest in VR now.
I, too, would like to see the cool graphics assets port over to non-VR users. However, I do see the value in pushing to get on to emerging platforms immediately in order to ship with them, thereby reaching a new audience with the cost being something GSW was going to do anyway at some point. Yes, we're all frustrated from time to time when things don't go as hoped, but I do admire GSWs ability to stick and move in response to upcoming opportunities.
Rin, I agree that valve is a strong supporter of Linux gaming and will be a significant driver in the future state.
Phaser/Whistler, if memory serves, Inc indicated or inferred that the way mobile saved the company was in providing funding that subscriptions weren't covering. And that goes back to my comparison of then vs. now. Mobile was successful because someone(s) threw money at GS, not because we were a wildly successful mobile game, or because we figured out a working mobile monetization strategy.
I have no doubt that this development is in some way beneficial for GS's continued existence but I am pessimistic that the work being put into it will be implemented in other platforms before the next big thing is on the horizon and priorities shift.

I see a lot of people worried about Guild softwares attention being shifted toward Vr. This has happened time and time again as they've been pOrting it across different medium. And guess what. The game is still here and you are still playing it.
This isn't your conventional mmo that releases expansion after expansion. This is a true sandbox that encompasses multiple platforms in which they can all interact. Which to me in itself is groundbreaking. I'm all for getting the Vr scene involved especially since it's the new up and coming thing. And it's not like GS has just started this they've been pouring in resources on Vr since the prototype occlus rift.
If you're tired of the game then take a break. If you are upset about lack of new content, take break. In 10 months to 10 years you'll come back wearing Vr goggles and we will take you back in open arms and when you ask us how are the new tridents we will laugh as we sit in our new portable flight simulators and say they are being released soon tm.

This guy gets it
Oh my, Stinkpalm. Please don't fuel joyless jokers flame. You know not what you do...
I quite value my eyesight so no VR for me but like others, I hope it makes its way into the PC build. If this is what it takes to get us to land in the station and belly up to the bar, then so be it.. Good luck Inc!

It's inevitable. :P

When you're on death bed about to croak and reflecting on your life, and you spent most of it building a goddamned trident which you end up barely using, would you be proud and happy with how you used your life?
Only fools waste life on things that matter very little. Dwell on this guys and maybe quit VO for good, for your own good.

If it takes somebody most of their life to build a Trident, then they're probably too incompetent to have done anything more interesting than that anyway. Might as well be proud of it.
One could argue that having kids is much, much easier than building a trident, and contributes much, much more to the world. All it takes is a willing partner and the right time of month.
But creating new humans does not do the world any favors unless you also do a good job of raising them. Otherwise you're probably just going to make things worse.
No, you don't need to raise a kid on your own. Just give full custody to one of the rich infertile couples who have been wanting a kid. Easy peasy!
Back to the topic please, gentlemen.
