Back now....but I lost a ship full of sss, grrrrr!!

Yes, the game had a brief outage this afternoon, for a few minutes. It was not related to anything under our control, but the upstream people are investigating what happened.

The game server technically stayed "up" through the outage, but we did a full server restart a little while ago, to make sure Kourier and all other game states were synchronized.

Slightly odd though - when I was able to re-login my ship was in the same sector as expected, but it's cargo of sss had disappeared, how does that work?

The particular type of outage that occurred also prevented the database from writing out, while similarly preventing the sectors from connecting to the database. Certain emergency timeouts then happened after awhile, and in some cases the most-recent sector changes were lost. We write critical data (like player inventories, character progression, etc) out to the database on a regular basis, explicitly to mitigate unforeseen failures like this one. But some loss is still possible, under certain conditions.

At our meeting yesterday, we talked about the ramifications of this specific type of outage, and how we could prevent data loss from this kind of case in the future, and we put a plan in place to modify the game server to help that. But, there will always be the possibility of rare situations where some degree of short-term data loss is possible.
