Actually,
You can sell locations (sector maps, secret base locations, whatever) in Eve-Online. The problem, of course, is if you are the buyer, you wonder how many other people has the seller sold that location to? Is it worth it for you to go there, only to find the "sellers" corp buddies looking to take your cruiser out just for kicks?
Eve also had a HUGE problem, that of warp point camping and blockading. People would drop cargo containers to CREATE lag at warp points, and then blow you out of space when you warped in. For no other reason other then they COULD, even if you were in a lowly newbie frigate.
It was relatively easy to get a cruiser I guess, since you could just AFK mine with your huge cargo ship in a "safe system". But, it did get boring after a while.
Hopefully, Vendetta will be different. I just downloaded it tonight, and it looks pretty cool already.
I'm a convert.

Mikadon: Well, I hope you realize that while Vendetta is pretty cool so far, your timing is bad. They just rebuilt the server code and its still pretty flaky. Most of the time the game runs alot smoother than it does right now.
ahhh, but it would look better to have some sort of filimentary graphics to suggest the net's presence
Spaceships that aren't flown, but "moused around" = Eve = no thanks
Permadeath = Eve = no thanks
Mining Similator = Eve = no thanks
Having to Corp up just to have a fighting chance = forced interaction = Eve = no thanks

Actually, the ability to mine could be pretty cool and I hope that the devs impliment it.
roguelazer: I agree. Prospecting in space has a long narrative tradiation. But, I think what Turmoly is refering to is that when EVE was first released, mining was about the only thing that players could actually do.
Making money:
I think that rock mining shouldn't be the only kind of mining available. For example, one can extend gigantic solar panels to collect energy, then sell full batteries to distributors, or one could extend huge trawling nets to collect space junk instead of mining it.
Heck, let us become shepherds to fleets of dumb little AIs that run around and collect minerals in the remote reaches of space.
Let us initiate a manned training program for new pilots, and pay veterans a commission for each of their trainees that passes.
Let us be sponsored by our respective governments to fly patrols along approved routes, following rows of beacons and engaging intruders, or reporting them to home.

I agree entirely with you ctishman. But I think that if the devs have enough time to put only ONE function into the TEST (and the rest into the final), that that one should by rock mining.
/me agrees with roguelazer.
What another way for the vendetta (final) game for making money would be selling sector maps... because isnt there somthing in there about people being able to probe space? eh? yeah... I can't wait for vendetta to reach final... devs, ill be you're slave? because i have no more money... but the g5 was worth it. but... no money, means no vendetta when it reaches final.... sigh. yeah
EVE isnt that good, i played it. Takes too damn long to do anything. I mean, a turn based MMORPG... thats like... you have to wait 3 weeks for a turn! guh! plus the story for vendetta basically is this, we're a bunch of humans that went through a wormhole and it shut, now we're stranded and we dont know how to get back, so we're trying to survive in the middle of space, and we are. But we're trying to find a way home. why? because home is where the apple pie is. and we all want that apple pie...

We Serco do not 'want' the Apple Pie, as you say. When we return home at last, we shall TAKE the pie throught a concerted military campaign.
On-Topic:
rogue: I see your point. Then again, 'solar sail mining' has the advantages of not needing special graphics, because they're micro-thread nets. :)

Turn based? EVE wouldn't interest me in the least.
Even if Vendetta was a complete game instead of an engine test comparing it to Eve would be like comparing apples and oranges.

Eve's combat as I understand it looks real time, but it actually owes more to tradiational algorithms for pen and paper RPG's, in which each ship throws some dice and calculates some damage based on the character's skill, the targets 'AC', the weapons load, and the distance between the ships. There are some tactics involved, but mostly in choosing the distance. At present, everyone I've talked to has said that the player skill based ships (and the ones that also most reward character skill) - the 'Frigates' (which are actually more like fighters) - are so outclassed by the more lumbering Cruisers and Battleships that there isn't really any skill after a certain point except in configuring your ship (and basically you'd just be copying proven designs after a certain point). At present, new players in Frigates tend to feel that they can't really contribute to a fight (precisely why I'd prefer to see Vendetta fighter oriented despite all my love for big ships), and Cruisers and Battleships are amazingly expensive and thus require a huge time investment. The EVE design team seems to be trying to address this by introducing new tech in the next release which will make Frigates much more effective against Cruisers and Battleships, plus a new ship type 'Destroyers' which are specifically designed to kill Frigates. That will take the game more in the direction of rock-paper-scissors style tactical complexity, but will still leave the game with much more a RTS feel than a flight sim.
I'm not saying EVE isn't an interesting game, but the ultimate game is much more like being a unit in a huge RTS (especially the emphasis on construction and resource allocation) than it is like being in a gigantic space sim.

Gah, we should make the story, if the devs like it, it will be the game, that would be cool... cool veands... beands... vine beans.
But the story is already made!
There's about a 50 or 60 page backstory, written some years ago to help us develop the concept art for the game, design the universe, etc. It is not yet public. There are some very condensed blurbs on the main guildsoftware.com site that refer to parts of it.
[Edit] But then, this has little bearing on comparing EVE to Vendetta, and I think the major points have been illustrated on the topic. The obvious differences being our real-time "twitch" combat vs EVE's turn-based "dice rolling" type system. Our game will also place an emphasis on exploration. Obviously, EVE is ostensibly "finished" as well, where our game still has quite a bit of development remaining.

See "Races and History" specifically, but people should see all the links there.
The point is that -guild software- already has a vision of where they are going. I know people want to be helpful by offering artwork and story ideas, but much of this has already been handled by the creative minds that have already taken us this far. You are all most valuable in hunting for bugs and giving feedback about gameplay.

uh....... this is an engine test, not a game.
but it's gonna be atleast a bit permanentish right?
Not like when the engine is done suddenly the game quits,.. right?

No, they'll keep the game. It's just that the game might not be anything like this - we don't know. Check out guildsoftware.com for more info on this.
To be honest that site is kinda,.. well,.. doesn't have much info on it,.. not even about this game.
There's a FAQ, but it has questions on it that would apply for almost every mmorpg :D
