Where's my motivation?
In the interest of time, can you tell us what you've done so far? Have you explored, done trade missions, combat missions, PvP?
VO is still in development. Some people like a "sandbox" approach where there are lots of options, while others want to be directed. Success is what you decide it is. If you want to be filthy rich, you can do that. Do you want to be a formidable combat pilot? You can do that. Pirate? Stealth trader? Defender of the downtrodden? Military? Role player? Do you want to build or crew a giant ship? All possible. There really isn't one objective - no endgame so far.

You're in a combat game with a bunch of people who hate combat, your objective is to kill them.
Have fun.

A minor correction, TRS, but otherwise spot on.
You can be filthy rich, but there's nothing to buy.
You can be amazing at combat, but aside from SpaceQuake bragging rights, there's neither a reason for fighting nor a benefit to winning.
Welcome to the world's most realistic outerspace simulator: lots of vacuum, nothing to do.

heh look! a bridge!
There is obviously much you have missed in your 9 hours here, but I think the real issue is that this is not the game for you.
Christ. Is it so hard to grasp? You pick your own objectives, allies and such. They don't have to be grandiose or anything, they can be anything small or big you decide to achieve for the sake of doing so.
In the pursuit of these objectives you will be hindered by some smartass or some corporation or some military group, and thus you have your first vendetta. The rest is history.

RABII, I would advise to join a guild and start talking to the people in the guild. The only thing that makes this game worth the time is the interaction with other players. They can get you up to speed on what to do next.
You have some keen insights; some of them I agree with, but not all of them.
To you I recommend keeping a journal (pen and paper), and limiting the amount of time you play.
Don't expect Vendetta to be more than what it is, and appreciate it for what it does have. Much of what you suggest is planned for the future. Vendetta after all is a video game: a deep and compelling one, nothing more or nothing less.
If you stick around, you may be surprised. I don't recommend this to everyone, but for you I think the right thing would be to keep a journal.
If that rings with you, here is some further reading on why:
The Eschatology of Vendetta Online
Escapades on Xperia Play
Lucid Dreams
(note: these are on a different website, mmorpg.com, although they are directly related to Vendetta Online)

The main problems wih Vendetta Online are lack of players and lack of developers. Might change when Vendetta Online gets on steam
This game is missing many things that you may find in some other mmorpg games. Some games are more "sandbox", anything goes, while others are more predetermined "storyline" type games. Some of the objectives in VO are under stated, and there is no clear "default" path of progression.
It is not necessarily intended that you complete each mission as it becomes available. Many of the missions are alternative paths, and many missions can be skipped in the early stages, and returned to at your convenience.
Some of the more clear objectives are:
Kill hive bots,
Join the (itani/serco) military,
Make a billion credits by shipping goods around the galaxy,
Escort convoys to protect them from pirates.
Some of the less clear goals are:
Build standing with most/all of the factions so that you can buy special ships and equipment.
pirate other players, and/or, protect other players from pirates.
kill every thing that moves.
farm specific hive bots for rare equipment.
The default path for itani/serco is to destroy the serco/itani.
The default path for the uit is to provide goods and services, protect trade lanes, hold the hive at bay, and otherwise keep the galaxy running smooth in order to economically assist the itani/serco in their pursuit of destroying each other.
Good luck.

Also, ignore Dr. Lecter and TheRedSpy, they are known trolls who should go find something else to do instead of poop on people.
Paragraphs. Use them.
"I understand that this is space after all, but the constant overall darkness of the game gets depressing."
Huh. That was actually the opposite of my experience when I first played VO. I thought it was too bright and colorful. It looked cartoony instead of like space. Granted, I started in Dau, where space is bright purple. Starting in Itan would have been less aesthetically jarring for me. Anyway, explore. Every system has its own ambiance. One of my favorites is Odia.
"I don't know what I'm striving for. I don't know what the objective is. I don't know what 'success' is or means in Vendetta."
What is the objective of a playground? To have fun. It's a set of equipment that people use to have fun. Play tag on it, climb and jump off of it, or just swing as high as you can manage, whatever. Find things you enjoy doing and do them. That's what VO is. In place of slides, swings, and monkey bars, we have spaceships, loot, and asteroids. Try out various activities like mining, trade, combat, and piracy, and see what you enjoy.
"Striving for perfection, I need to not let that get to me because being destroyed might be 'commonplace' in Vendetta OnLine."
I have died 10,834 times so far :P

Without having read everything here.. we definitely have a lack of strong direction in the early game. We need stronger missions after the tutorials, and that's something where we intend to focus some time. Particularly for people used to heavily linear games, ours does not offer a very easy introduction.
Most of our recent development has been on "endgame" constructs, either for existing veteran players, or to fix problems and enable "larger" gameplay. The latter being our current focus, which is unfortunately invisible.
I do appreciate the feedback, in any case.

Prepare yourself for management speak and consider this video.
RABII... I ran into some of your issues back when I was a trader, so I joined a trade guild and had a bit of fun but not much. Later, I formed my own guild made some allies and concocted a political agenda, got into a bunch of wars and much later joined a nationalist guild whose politics were similar to mine.
My point is what makes the game enjoyable for me... is the other players more than the missions.
Also, if you stick around... join the PCC and you can make your own missions.

Mine, trade, shoot, loot, repair, talk, type, lua code, manufacture, game, mission coding, HUD designs, suggestion forum, role playing forum, bug reports, the choice is yours, don't pigeonhole yourself.
