Corvults are nowhere near as good as Valks ARF.No matter how you cut it.Nothing is anywhere near as good as your Valks, and as if that wasnt enough you got the other super ship IBG which you dont even use.Youre cowered as far as ships go.You got the best gear in the game and youre complaining?Be glad Serco are cool enough to agree to give you even yet another awesome ship even though you dont even deserve it yet.

Given the choice for fighting a SCP I'd choose the Corvult over any of the valks every time. The 75m/s strafe makes all the difference when dodging flares or keeping a safe distance from a gatling turret. The paper-thin profile more than makes up for the difference in armor.

The side without Valks are at a disadvantage. SCP, Prom II and SVG(?) did quite well here.

A few points to keep in mind:

1. The Valk is the only 3 port interceptor which can utilize a flare, scanner, drain blaster, etc as its 3rd port, AND retain both dual energy and interception capabilities.

2. Not utilizing the 3rd port, the valk is vastly superior to the corvult in terms of armor, weight, and interception. The corvult is better in some dogfighting scenarios, but if a Prom wants to run away, I doubt a curvult lacks the ability to catch it and kill it before it warps. The valk might.

3. Incarnate smacks TRS repeatedly with the proverbial rolled-up-newspaper. The reason TRS' suggestions get implemented is because he makes specific suggestions, with data, and use-cases, and they get debated.

4. I'm glad to see other stuff getting bumped up. There's nothing in the backstory that says the Itani and only the Itani can have a combat-respectable interceptor. When the other ships get balanced against the new par, revisit the valk and figure out if it needs adjustment.

5. Vi is superior to Emacs.

"The reason TRS' suggestions get implemented is because he makes specific suggestions, with data, and use-cases, and they get debated."

That's bullshit, lol.

There have been TONS of specific suggestions (data/use/etc) supplied by others than have fallen through the cracks of these forums that would be just as easy to impliment as TRS's suggestions have been. The only difference is TRS makes bar graphs and pie charts, and the devs love him for reasons unknown.

No, the only difference is that he happened to be making a thread a time when I was making changes and paying attention. It's a timing thing, not a favored-personality thing.

If you have some counter-suggestion you would like to promote on Suggestions, then do that. Link to those old threads, I appreciate that stuff.

The graphs don't matter much, but the core content and argument do. The personality making the suggestion is not a factor.

"Incarnate smacks TRS repeatedly with the proverbial rolled-up-newspaper."

I have the dents in my proverbial forehead to prove it.

Anyway, I only make a suggestion post if I hear that they are currently working on one piece of content and it often doesn't get implemented. For instance when I heard they were working on power draining weapons I spammed threads with different power drain weapon implementations like throwing spaghetti on the wall, but sadly only the most boring implementation made the cut but I guess only time will tell.

"5. Vi is superior to Emacs."

Hell, no! :-)

Anyway, I agree that the SVG buffs were well-argued and it makes sense that they were implemented.

I've not been around as long as some, but I've not seen a good proposal for a Itani tank role, so maybe you should do as Inc suggests and create a good proposal, OR link one from the past and argue why it would make sense given the current state of the 'verse. I actually think that a combination of L ports and turrets could be nice as it would really be different in character from the SCP, but that is something for another thread.

I don't think I've ever understood why balance is such a hot topic when there aren't any massively impactful ways for the nations to square off against each other. If anything, time could be spent just throwing wacky variants of ships and weapons out there for a week or two and seeing how they perform, and iterating on the results until there's some greater variation.

The amount of white noise generated by idiots complaining about the state of the prom and idiots complaining about the state of the valk and idiots complaining that they don't have access to the prom or the valk and idiots complaining that pirates can do this and idiots complaining that traders can do this and I'm pretty sure this is what an aneurysm feels like.

Stop thinking about how "fair" things are, because that is Stupid with a Capital J. If something doesn't have a role, that's a good candidate for tweaking. If it's slightly sub-par in one aspect, kindly shut up about it. Push for new things and big changes, stop wasting time arguing about 100kg or whatever other trivial crap comes to mind. If there is a serious balance issue, nobody is more committed to dealing with that than Guild. I can only imagine that when certain players try games like Street Fighter 4 or DotA or CoD or whatever else they break down into a wailing mess.

I'm with Uncle Dave, who echoes the resounding demand for more content that has been present on this forum for years and years..

But unfortunately it seems fairly clear that both the devs and a core group of vets are vehemently against just tossing in crazy ship variants for the hell of it. Have you seen TRS's pie charts?
Feb 13, 2014 SkinWalker link
Mmmm. Pie.
Feb 14, 2014 Touriaus link
Throwing random and wacky variants out there for two weeks is a bad idea. That is two weeks of turning newbs off from the game. Which equates to less income.
Feb 14, 2014 UncleDave link
That all depends on the trade-off. If they're made especially good at one role but terrible at everything else, you may see a lot of 400cu Behemoths with 3000 health, or L port Valks with no spin torque and crazy turbo drain, but they sure as hell won't be the only ship out there.

+1 to uncle Dave again!

Before they start throwing new variants into the game, I'd rather see work done to add further customizability to the game. Why should everyone be flying Ship MkX with Weapons X,Y,Z? Why not Ship MkY (+modX, +modY), with Weapons A, B, C?

Balance is a hard thing to deduce with so few pilots. Somebody like Spidey breaks the curve, two people like Spidey basically ruin the data unless you can identify them and remove them from the calculation.

If you expect perfect balance you will always be disappointed.

My point is we should stop worrying so much about it. We make suggestions, devs make adjustments, and if changes don't work in my favor, I adjust what I do.

I don't mind fighting a prom with a corvult. What I don't do is fight 2 or more proms with a corvult. Call me a runner all you like, it doesn't bother me because my enemies behave the same way.

Years ago there was a serco prom jock named Lin. He/she (dunno) used to go on at length to me directly about how bad I was at PVP. I fought Lin one on one many times using valk, revC, IBG, it didn't matter, I lost almost every fight. I couldn't at that time find a way to beat a prom 1v1. So I worked on an alt until I could get an SCP, went to Lin and fought SCP vs SCP four times, won all four fights pretty easily. It's just a matter sometimes of style vs style. I probably could not beat most of today's prom jocks using a prom. So what does this say about balance? Nothing, except that balance is harder to attain than most people think.

Devs, I love your game, thank you.

If I was in the devs' position, I'd be data mining to find out which weapons, ships, and loadouts people use, don't use, and are effective with. We've got enough of a sample size to tell what ships and weapons are way above the rest.
Feb 16, 2014 csgno1 link
I don't agree. We are a small set of people and we influence each other's choices. Games like SC2 can do it because the devs have data on thousands of match-ups per hour, spanning months between changes they release.

Lin became a Prom Jock?

Damn.
