This is the result of a 3+ hour interview from several months ago, published by "Milwaukee Magazine" a local upscale print-media magazine. The author is a true space-sim fan, and he's played VO quite a bit:

I should point out that the game server itself has not been running for 2000+ days without restart, but rather the underlying server OS itself (I don't remember exactly how I said it, but clearly differentiating between "the game server" vs "the server the game.. runs on" can be a little challenging; plus, it was something we touched on briefly in a long interview). We had just rolled over 2000 days of OS-uptime, so that was on my mind.

The fundamental point is accurate, though. We've had the game server up for something like six months at a time, which is still vastly longer than most of the rest of our genre (thanks to hot-loading updates and new code). In any 3-hour-long interview, some minor communication challenges like this are going to happen :).

Overall, I think the piece is quite cool. Hope you guys like it.

Recently, a player operating on his own defeated a boss normally destroyed only by a guild that has planned out attacks over a number of days.

Before this lone wolf could fire a single shot at the “Leviathan,” he had to bring down “an entire force” of ships, according to Bergman, and that “was borderline stunning.”

Props to Greenwall. :p

Wow, that animated GIF really does VO's graphics no justice :(

Well it is an.. animated GIF. He posts a recent screenshot further down.

Yeah, and the screenshot looks pretty sweet. I suppose he could have just linked the YouTube video instead.

So... Korea?

S. Korea has one of the largest MMO markets in Asia. We're actually ratings-approved there. China is a huge market too, but challenging for a very different set of reasons. Japan is well. But localization is a big undertaking for us.

For the moment, I'm more focused on improving the game, rather than localizing and new markets; but it's still something that we've been examining in the background all along.

Awesome article; I relate to being homeschooled until high school age, also sailing (my Dad and I used to race a wooden Snipe - I would crew, he would skipper. Nothing like cruising through the Caribbean, I'm sure).

It's exciting reading about prospective markets for VO in east Asia, too. The game is getting some much needed press in this article; it's good to see some of the near-term gameplay plans included.

Speaking of sailboats, my family is getting a 19 footer. Pretty excited about that
Anywho, this is awesome. S. Korean gamers should be interesting

I actually emailed him that suggestion, and he added the trailer to the bottom of the post :).

You know we made a video of this, right?

Nice article. :) Congrats!

Guild had to hide some “proprietary” assets before I could enter, and Bergman and I left after a short time to sit in the vacant office across the hall.

Tell us more! :)

Excellent article!

I'm guessing that, given all the devices VO runs on, they have unreleased gear covered under non-disclosure agreements. The last thing they need is somebody from the tech media spotting something they shouldn't. It's nice that the author mentions how seriously John takes that responsibility.

Maybe it's the steam box. hehe
